BLM PLANS OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITY
OPEN HOUSE AT RED ROCK CANYON

The Bureau of Land Management Red Rock/Sloan Field Office has scheduled an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center classroom, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.

It will highlight recreation opportunities on public land and will focus on full-time commercial outfitters and guides at Red Rock Canyon.

Off-road, hiking, biking, climbing and horseback tour companies will be at the open house, and several will have tours starting from the Visitor Center or a nearby designated area. Some will offer discounts for future expeditions.

Participating companies include Bobcat Tours, Escape Adventures, McGhie’s Bike Outpost, Cowboy Trail Rides and Red Rock Riding Stables, Jackson Hole Mountain Guides and American Alpine Institute.

COMPUTER CLUB TO MEET SATURDAY
AT TOTAL WINE & MORE

The Clark County Commodore Computer Club (aka 5C’s) has scheduled its next meeting for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the business conference room of Total Wine & More, 730 S. Rampart Blvd. in Boca Park.

The club is for enthusiasts of the Commodore 64 and Amiga, as well as other computers in the Commodore line. The public is welcome.

Demonstrations will include Microsoft Multiplan spreadsheet software for the Commodore 64 and Makerbot 3-D printer software for PC. Free door prizes include AhnLab Click anti-virus hardware/software for PC and a Logitech webcam for PC laptops. All attendees are eligible for door prizes. TRAVEL CLUB TO MEET AT TAP HOUSE

The Las Vegas Singles Travel and Social Club invites mature adults to its meetings, which are scheduled for 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month at The Tap House, 5589 W. Charleston Blvd. The next meeting is set for April 23.

The meet-and-greet portion is set to start at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room. Discussions focus on day trips, local events, in-state and out-of-state traveling, cruises and international traveling. SEMINAR TO COVER NEVADA ASSET PROTECTION TRUSTS

The Nevada Trust Company and the Marquis Aurbach Coffing law firm plan to host a free seminar, Nevada Asset Protection Trusts, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 25 at the law firm’s headquarters, 10001 Park Run Drive. Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served at 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to protect their family assets against a variety of threats. Nevada laws are unique in that a trust established in Nevada protects its assets from any challenge, including a lawsuit or a tax lien. If a family transfers assets into the trust and is later successfully sued, the assets in the trust are beyond the reach of legal seizure.

DJS FOR PJS TO HOST PAJAMA DRIVE APRIL 26

The 11th annual DJS for PJS event is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 26. The daylong event is designed to collect new pajamas for children in crisis and benefits charities throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Local disc jockeys will encourage corporate and individual donations by broadcasting on-site from four Kohl’s stores: in the Summerlin area at 8671 W. Charleston Blvd.; in Centennial Hills at 6700 N. Durango Drive; in southwest Las Vegas at 4250 Blue Diamond Road; and in Henderson at 30 N. Valle Verde Drive.

The aim is to collect 8,000 pairs of pajamas.

Foreclosed Upon Pets plans to have an information table at the ArtWalk slated from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27 and 28 in the Vista Commons Center, 11700 W. Charleston Blvd.

FUPI’s adoptions for 2012 numbered 324 cats and 258 dogs in Las Vegas. It also sent 462 dogs to a partner program in Canada.

The Women’s Club of Summerlin is taking applications through May 16 for its Dare To Dream grant program. Grants of up to $3,000 are offered to women who need assistance with educational opportunities, learning new skills or endeavoring to improve their lives in a responsible manner. Women who apply must be at least 21 and live in Las Vegas.

VONS ACCEPTING EASTER SEALS DONATIONS

Each year, Vons dedicates April to its Support for People with Disabilities fundraising campaign to benefit Easter Seals, the Special Olympics and an array of organizations that help people with disabilities live fuller, more independent lives.

Through April 30, all Las Vegas Valley Vons stores will accept donations at the checkouts to benefit Easter Seals Nevada. Ninety cents of each dollar raised will directly support individuals served by the organization.

Vons has raised and donated more than $130 million to support organizations such as Easter Seals, the Special Olympics and a range of other organizations that assist people with special needs.

Easter Seals Nevada is one of Nevada’s largest community disability agencies, serving more than 7,000 people with disabilities and their families each year.

SUPERIOR TIRE & SERVICE TO OPEN UP TO 11 VALLEY LOCATIONS

Superior Tire & Service, a factory-authorized Goodyear Tire and automotive service dealer, expects to open up to 11 locations locally by the end of May.

Nevada’s previous Goodyear dealership closed in December following the death of its owner. Superior Tire & Service purchased the assets of the business and expects to rehire most of its 81 employees.

It will handle all Goodyear Nationwide Warranty service and honor service contracts from the previous ownership.

Superior Tire & Service locations are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Six locations are currently open: 2120 E. FAMILY PROMISE TO HOST CARDBOARD CITY FUNDRAISER

Family Promise of Las Vegas plans to host its Cardboard City fundraiser at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More, 130 N. Pecos Road.

Each team or individual is asked to raise at least $100 in order to take part in the event where participants spend the night in cardboard homes.

The goal is to raise $30,000 and to have at least 300 people attend the sleepover.

ART CONTEST TO TAKE SUBMISSIONS

Each year the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission and the city of Las Vegas sponsor the Celebrating Life! fine arts competition for artists 50 or older in Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, Mineral and Nye counties. Entries for the 13th annual juried event are being accepted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23-24 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. There is no fee to enter.

Artists may enter original works in the following fine art media categories: drawing and pastel, mixed media, painting, sculpture and ceramics, watercolor and gouache; and photography.

Only one work per artist may be submitted.

A public reception and awards ceremony is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 24 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center. The exhibition is slated be displayed there May 24-July 13.

JW MARRIOTT OPENS POOL TO LOCALS

The JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd., has announced pool hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (subject to weather) and until 7 p.m. when warmer weather arrives.

The resort’s 11,000-square-foot pool is available to locals on a daily, monthly and seasonal basis. Individual memberships are $100 a month or $300 for the season. Family memberships are $200 a month or $600 for the season. There are two family membership packages offered: two adults and up to three children or one adult and up to four children. Members receive discounted cabana rates, based on availability, and 10 percent off all items at the Waterside Cafe and all retail products. Memberships are not valid on holidays.

Daily pool passes are available Monday through Friday for $10 for those 16 or older and $5 for children 6 to 15. Children 5 or younger receive complimentary entry. A maximum of three children per adult will be allowed. Daily pool passes are not available on weekends and holidays.

The JW Marriott also plans to host special events at the pool throughout spring and summer, including pool parties and Friday Happy Hour, which features music and discounts on beer, frozen drinks and appetizers from 4 to 7 p.m.
