Teacher shares students’ heartwrenching notes with #IWishMyTeacherKnew

A Denver teacher has been sharing notes from her students on Twitter, and many of them are heartbreaking.

Kyle Schwartz, a third-grade teacher at Doull Elementary in Denver, started the #IWishMyTeacherKnew project a few weeks ago. She asked her students to finish the sentence “I wish my teacher knew ___” and has been tweeting photos of their responses. She called it a “reality check.”

Doull’s students are mostly Hispanic, with 92 percent qualifying for free or reduced lunch programs, according to USA Today. The notes provide insight into what many students deal with every day outside of school.

“As a new teacher, I struggled to understand the reality of my students’ lives and how to best support them,” Schwartz told ABC News. “I just felt like there was something I didn’t know about my students.”
