Teen killed after tracking down his lost smartphone

An 18-year-old Canadian man was fatally shot while trying to retrieve his lost smartphone, which he had left in a taxi.

Jeremy Cook, of Brampton, Ontario, was found Sunday morning by police in the back of a shopping mall in a nearby town with multiple gun shot wounds. Police said Cook was tracking his lost smartphone using a mobile-tracking app.

Cook was confronted by three men in a car when he arrived at the address the app took him to, CBC News reported. Police said that when Cook tried to get his phone, the car began to drive away and that’s when shots were fired.

“The app itself is a great tool to have. Nobody could ever predict that what occurred was going to occur in that case,” London Police Constable Ken Steeves said.

“But if you suspect there’s any potential for violence at all, we certainly encourage people to contact police. We’d be more than happy to come out and investigate with the hopes of retrieving the phone.”
