Video appears to show police officer kicking K9
A 26-second video shot by a Peoria, Ariz., woman is getting a lot of attention because it shows a Peoria police officer can be seen hitting his K-9 partner. The Peoria Police Department confirms that there in an internal investigation underway to determine whether policies, protocols and training were followed in the incident.
The video was taken sometime over the weekend in a neighborhood near 88th Drive and Peoria Avenue. The woman who recorded the encounter had originally pulled out her cellphone when she heard police at her neighbor's house. You can tell what she captured shocked her.
"He's kicking that dog! What the hell!" she can be heard saying on the video.
In the clip, you can see a Peoria police officer hit his K-9 partner with what looks like the leash. The woman who recorded the incident believes he also kicked the working police dog.
"At this point we are still investigating what occurred. Examining every aspect of this incident will take time and for this we thank the media and the community for their patience," the Peoria Police Department said in a statemet. "In the meantime, we appreciate the concern the community has expressed for our K9 partners. Due to the fact we are in the midst of an internal investigation we are declining interviews with our officers for the moment."
It is not clear why the officers were at the house to begin with, but neighbors said there have been some break-ins at that home and the one next to it recently.
When asked whether the officer remained on the job, working with a K-9 while the IA investigation is underway, our crew was told his title and duty status remains the same.
