Winning is such sweet Murrow

Tis the season to take home some shiny new hardware for the mantelpiece.
Following last week’s coup de Peabody, when KLAS-TV, Channel 8 investigative bulldog George Knapp and his I-team scored the prestigious Peabody Award, the station has again been honored with an Edward R. Murrow Award for its Web site, LasVegasNOW.com, this time joined by KVBC-TV, Channel 3, which takes home a Murrow for its post-Olympics sports reporting.
The awards, announced Thursday, have been bestowed since 1971 by the Radio-Television News Directors Association and named after the late, legendary CBS broadcaster who set a gold standard for broadcast journalists and was famed for, among other accomplishments, his takedown of Red Scare-peddling fearmonger Sen. Joseph McCarthy.
Congrats to all the kids over at Channel 3 and Channel 8. For all the pesky criticism I lob their way in the R-J’s weekly Mediaology column, it’s a pleasure to give them a sincere salute — nothing backhanded about it.
