Wish we were going to war with a Michael Corleone, instead of Fredo

For Las Vegas aficionados who watched the president’s speech tonight on the ISIS terror threat, this line from Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic will resonate:

“Michael Corleone’s fatalistic insight about the mafia also holds true for presidents in the Middle East: ‘Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.’

And so we go back to war in Iraq and engage in a new conflict in Syria.

It’s too bad Michael isn’t president. We’d destroy ISIS methodically and ruthlessly before Thanksgiving. Sadly, we have Fredo as a commander in chief.

Let me give you one — just one — example of how this president just doesn’t measure up.

Just 30 days ago, he sat down with the New York Times and pontificated about his presidency and the world.

When asked about his failure to support moderate Syrian rebels to fight against ISIS, he said this:

“With ‘respect to Syria,’ said the president, the notion that arming the rebels would have made a difference has ‘always been a fantasy. This idea that we could provide some light arms or even more sophisticated arms to what was essentially an opposition made up of former doctors, farmers, pharmacists and so forth, and that they were going to be able to battle not only a well-armed state but also a well-armed state backed by Russia, backed by Iran, a battle-hardened Hezbollah, that was never in the cards.’”

Now we’re going to arm those “doctors, farmers, pharmacists and so forth” with sophisticated weapons, give them massive air support, and, by gawd, we’re going to “eventually destroy” ISIS.

That’s the plan? We’re going to implement “a fantasy”?

I’m worried that President Fredo Obama has no wartime consigliere and that means we’re in for a long, half-hearted effort.

But, he’s my president. I’ll back his play and pray that somewhere along the line he finds wisdom and a backbone.
