Stolen home in Southern Nevada

Thousands of homes sell every month in Southern Nevada, but it seems they rarely, if ever, trade hands under the circumstances surrounding the one at 809 Palmhurst Drive. After owner Carole Barnish died in August, Shalena Earnheart filed a deed for the house and a probate case for Barnish’s estate. Earnheart said she was Barnish’s “only help” and “constant companion” for many years. But long-time neighbors say they’d never seen or heard of Earnheart until she took title to the home. She’s been accused of forgery and of repeatedly breaking into and ransacking Barnish’s house.

The Lights FC’s defense has struggled this preseason. The team allowed nine goals in its first three games. That’s drawn the ire of coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola. We cannot concede so many things so easily. We are giving them things. They are winning without any effort. The Lights are trying to balance being aggressive on offense and smart on defense. A woman wielding a pickax was arrested Tuesday near a North Las Vegas elementary school. A woman was reported climbing on the outside of the chain link fence at Williams Elementary School while more than 200 students were outside. She was screaming and yelling that she was gonna kill everybody. Police took her into custody after officers told her to come down from the fence. Kisstal Killough was booked into Las Vegas Detention Center on four counts, including assault with a deadly weapon. Police say she appeared to be impaired.

MGM Resorts ready to increase resort fees

MGM Resorts International plans to raise their resort fees at some properties. The timing or size of the fee increase wasn’t given, but hinted they might soon push them up to Caesars’ level. Caesars raised resort fees at their eight Las Vegas Strip properties on Feb. 1. The rise in resort and other fees, like parking, will help offset inevitably higher labor costs, executives said. MGM spokeswoman Mary Hynes says the market “has experienced recent increases, and we subsequently anticipate making adjustments in the near future.” In January, MGM announced it would increase parking fees at 11 of its 12 Strip properties.

A Bellagio employee is accused of stealing $1,875 worth of lobster tails. Alex Hernandez, 49, faces one count of embezzlement. He was detained by hotel security until police arrived and took him into custody. Hernandez is being held at the Clark County Detention Center. His bail is set at $5,000.

A pedestrian has been hospitalized after being struck by a sports utility vehicle early Tuesday morning. The man suffered serious injuries from the crash, which was reported just after 5 a.m. on Craig Road near Puebla Street. The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and was cooperating with police. He did not appear to be impaired, police said.

Jason Gastwirth, senior vice president of entertainment for Caesars, and Tyler Williams, “fungineer” for Zappos, described the agreement as the first step in a long-term relationship. “This is a strategic marketing plan and a coming together of our organizations,” Gastwirth over the phone Saturday. Zappos agreed to an exclusive, five-year marketing partnership with Caesars. The deal could lead to additional venue-branding possibilities between Zappos and Caesars. But for now, Williams said, “We are pouring everything we have into this partnership.”

Car crash near credit union kills 2

Two people were killed in a car crash Sunday afternoon in the western valley. Two cars collided about 4:45 p.m. on Rainbow Boulevard, just south of Westcliff Drive. A white Chrysler struck a black Toyota as it was turning left into a shopping center, Las Vegas police said. The Chrysler jumped a curb and struck the corner of the Silver State Schools Credit Union office. The Toyota flipped and the driver and the passenger, who was ejected from the car, died at the scene. The driver of the Chrysler suffered minor injuries and police said he was not impaired. It’s unclear if he will face charges.

Pyeongchang celebrates at Olympic closing ceremony

After 16 days of sliding, skating, jumping and sweeping, the Pyeongchang Games have come to a close with one last party. The Winter Olympics concluded Sunday night with a bash at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, a final hurrah for the venue before it’s demolished. The show included a rocking guitar solo, roller skating panda bears and performances from K-pop super group EXO and singer CL. DJ Martin Garrix from the Netherlands performed at the ceremony as well. Performers carried lights and danced throughout the ceremony. Athletes took photos with each other to celebrate. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, center, handed the Olympic flag to the mayor of Beijing, China, Chen Jining, during the closing ceremony. Performers dressed as pandas took the stage as Beijing was celebrated as the next host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
