It sold 244.8 acres of residential land in Summerlin – Las Vegas’ largest master-planned community – for $144.7 million last year. That’s up from 206.6 acres for $120.7 million in 2017. Summerlin spans 22,500 acres along the valley’s western rim and has roughly 110,000 residents.

Southern Nevada is about 800 mechanics short, according the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. As the technology in cars continues to advance, it’s becoming more difficult to find auto mechanics and technicians who know how to work on the vehicles. Usually, a labor shortage translates to higher wages. But the median wage for auto service workers in Clark County is $17.50 an hour, according to Emsi, a labor market analytics firm The average hourly wage in the Las Vegas Valley is $21.37, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Valley Electric Association is an energy cooperative headquartered in Pahrump, Nevada. The cooperative provides electric service to more than 45,000 people in a 6,800-square-mile service area, primarily along the California-Nevada border. The cooperative is member-owned, meaning all members who receive electricity through its transmission grid are also considered owners. The “member-owner” status gives each person a voice in how their cooperative operates. Members elect the leadership, and any member can become part of the leadership team. According to Valley Electric’s website, it has 17,500 member-consumers who participate in its governance.

Home prices rose in every ZIP code in the Las Vegas Valley in 2018 for the second year in a row, according to SalesTraq. Prices grew fastest in older, more centrally located areas. But prices were highest in the suburbs. The top three ZIP codes for price growth were 89119 (29.8%), 89146 (25%) and 89030 (24.6%). The top three ZIP codes for median sales prices were 89138 ($464,500), 89135 ($420,500) and 89052 ($370,000).

Las Vegas’ apartment market has accelerated in recent years. Developers are packing the suburbs with projects, landlords are on a buying spree, and tenants are filling buildings. Rents are also rising at one of the fastest rates in the country, stretching affordability for some. The average asking rent for a Las Vegas apartment is $1,059, up more than 25 percent since early 2013, according to research firm Reis Inc. The rental market has gained speed amid strong job and population growth. And landlords, despite raising the rents, are having little trouble signing tenants.

The Daneshgar family, owners of 3D Investments, acquired the spread at Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane. Previous plans for the site included hotel-condo projects the W Las Vegas and Las Ramblas. Backers of the $3 billion Las Ramblas included actor George Clooney and nightclub owner Rande Gerber.

Billionaire hedge fund activist Carl Icahn has made some big bets on Nevada that have paid off. Icahn purchased the Stratosphere out of bankruptcy court in 1998. He also bought two Arizona Charlie’s casinos and a Laughlin casino. He sold those properties for $1.3 billion in 2007. Icahn bought the partially built, mothballed Fontainebleau hotel out of bankruptcy for around $150 million in 2010. He sold it for $600 million in 2017. In 2008, Icahn bought a stake in Tropicana Entertainment. He sold it last year before the market selloff to Eldorado Resorts for $1.85 billion. In 2019, Icahn confirmed that he has purchased a 9.8 percent stake in Caesars Entertainment Corp. worth more than $600 million.

Weather, low fuel force flight to land at Nellis near Las Vegas

An American Airlines flight on its way to McCarran International Airport made an emergency landing at Nellis Air Force Base on Saturday afternoon. Flight 671 was diverted to the base because of wind conditions at the airport and low fuel levels, Nellis spokeswoman Rebekah Mattes said. American Airlines spokesman Josh Freed said there was no fuel leak, and the airplane had enough gas to get to McCarran. The airplane, which was on its way to Las Vegas from the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, had 194 people on board, including six crew members.

Nevada looking to strengthen trade ties with India

Nevada has a new task force to strengthen trade ties with India. The Nevada-India Economic Development and Business Task Force hopes to attract direct investment in Nevada and expand exports to India. India is Nevada’s second largest trading partner, behind Switzerland. In 2017, the state exported more than $1.8 billion in products, goods and services to India. That same year, it imported more than $400 million in goods.

A report from JPMorgan Chase found that male business owners in Las Vegas have higher first-year revenue than their female counter parts. According to the report, male business owners in Las Vegas made an average of $70,000 in the first year. Female business owners made an average of $57,000 in revenue their first year, a 20 percent difference. Other cities had larger gaps. Austin, for instance, had a 73 percent difference between male and female first-year revenue. And the gap in San Antonio was a 79 percent difference.

Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly says the airline is “very focused” on Hawaii. Hawaiians have a strong presence in Las Vegas.The city’s unofficial status is “Hawaii’s ninth island.” In 2018, at least 2,958 people from Hawaii moved to Nevada. Of those, 88.7 percent moved into Clark County, according to driver license surrender data. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, 310,249 people came to Las Vegas from Hawaii in 2018.

Las Vegas is finally home to one of Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirror rooms. The rooms replicate infinity. “Aftermath of Obliteration of Infinity” is a dark room covered in mirrors. Inside are hundreds of suspended yellow lanterns. The cube is small. But it feels like it goes on forever. Her other installation “Narcissus Garden” forms a lake of reflective spheres. The Yayoi Kusama exhibit will be open in Las Vegas until April 28.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board unanimously approved looking into an alternative energy provider. So far, six companies have left NV Energy, including MGM Resorts International, Barrick Goldstrike and Switch. In 2018, 10 companies began making moves to leave, including the Las Vegas stadium, the MSG Sphere and Boyd Gaming Corp. The LVCVA will go through the 704B process with the Public Utilities Commission to try to get approval to use Texas-based power marketer Tenaska Power Services Co.

The younger Augmon didn’t grow up playing basketball, though, and was a cheerleader for several years. Her dad never pressured her until playing basketball, and she decided to start on her own in seventh grade. Augmon started for the Patriots last year and helped them reach the Class 4A state championship game. A shrinking middle class poses a threat to Nevada’s economic growth, according to Jonas Peterson, CEO of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance. The Pew Research Center classifies middle-class citizens as singles who make between $24,000 and $73,000 or a family of four that makes between $48,000 and $145,000. The 1961 Wire Act prohibited the use of interstate telephone transmissions to facilitate betting. In September 2011, the US Department of Justice released a formal legal opinion on the scope of the Act. The 2011 opinion concluded “interstate transmissions of wire communications that do not relate to a ‘sporting event or contest’ fall outside the reach of the Wire Act.” But a new Department of Justice opinion dated November 2, 2018 reversed the 2011 opinion. It said that the Wire Act’s prohibitions are “not uniformly limited to gambling on sporting events or contests.” According to research group Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, sShould this matter move through the court system, questions to be addressed include: Does the Wire Act apply to sports betting only, or all types of gambling? Is an online bet placed and received within a single state an interstate bet, since data may have been routed through other states? Does the Wire Act apply to legal online gambling? The uncertainty around the opinion creates meaningful short and long-term risks for the gaming industry, Eilers & Krejcik Gaming said.

Local organizations caution that the new housing needs to be coordinated with other local initiatives.
