Police chase ends with suspects captured in east Las Vegas

An early Tuesday morning chase ended with a car crash in an east Las Vegas neighborhood. Police were pursuing the vehicle, which they say was involved in robberies in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, when the driver crashed at Owens and Statz Street. A man was taken into custody. A woman was ejected from a vehicle and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The intersection at Mojave Road and Owens Avenue was shut down while police officers searched for the suspect and investigated. The intersection will remain closed for most of the morning.

All 30 teams will compete in this year’s Las Vegas NBA Summer League. The annual event has become a big hit with fans. The Lakers’ Lonzo Ball was last year’s top player. Jayson Tatum of the Celtics was one of last year’s standouts. The 76ers’ Markelle Fultz was the No. 1 overall draft pick.

As part of a panel of experts, Bruce Ford of Boston-area hotel services firm Lodging Econometrics spoke of fast-growing communities for hospitality. Southern California and Nashville have seen impressive construction for a variety of room types, he told a crowd at the Hospitality Design Expo and Conference. The expo brought about 17,500 people to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Becker sisters lead Foothill softball into region tournament

Kylie and Leah Becker have sparked Foothill’s run to the postseason. Kylie, a senior, is one of the top shortstops in the region, and Foothill’s leadoff hitter. Leah, a sophomore, is the No. 3 hitter and the Falcons’ ace in the circle. Kylie is committed to play softball at Montana, where Leah begins her recruitment cycle next year. The postseason begins Tuesday when Foothill hosts Green Valley at 4 p.m.

Queen with Adam Lambert has announced 10 shows on the Strip this fall. Crown Jewels runs from Sept. 1-Sept. 22 at The Park Theater. Queen and Lambert will play such hits as “We Are the Champions” and “Another One Bites the Dust.” Lambert says of Crown Jewels, “You’ll be humming them all night.” The show is three months before Lady Gaga opens at Park Theater in December.

Rancho smacked four home runs on Saturday
to beat two-time defending state champion Basic, 16-4. The Rams took advantage of five errors to score seven unearned runs. Layton Walls hit a solo homer to kick off Rancho’s eight-run second inning. Jimmy Gamboa went the distance, allowing 3 ER to pick up the victory.
He threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of 22 batters. Rancho now is 8-1 in the Sunrise League, a game ahead of second-place Basic.

An idea to bring the women’s Sweet 16 basketball tournament to Las Vegas is still alive. Former UNLV athletic director and men’s NCAA Tournament chairman Jim Livengood has been working on the concept. Livengood’s idea: To play all four NCAA women’s regionals in Las Vegas at the same time. This year’s women’s Final Four was exciting and was played in front of sellout crowds. The four regionals attracted only modest turnouts. The NCAA currently has a rule prohibiting championship events from being played in Las Vegas.

Reno native David Wise will participate in his second Winter Olympics this month. Wise won a gold medal in the halfpipe skiing event in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Wise said he is feeling 100 percent heading into the Games after two of the hardest years of his life. He is considered one of the favorites in the halfpipe skiing event.
