Car nut finds perfection at Planet Hyundai


At the age of 42, Mark Perkinson is a combination construction defect inspector and admitted car nut who has been a subscriber to automobile magazines for more than 20 years.

The Las Vegas resident recently purchased a 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS with a Popular Equipment Package from Planet Hyundai Centennial at 6200 Centennial Center Blvd. If ever there was a buyer who has done his homework before buying a car, it has to be the energetic Perkinson.

"I owned a 2007 Hyundai Accent base model previously and received a call from Hyundai about a month ago. I was asked if I wanted to step into something new and I knew right then that I wanted a Sonata," he said.

Perkinson had studied the Sonata for about 13 months.

"When I saw the first Sonata pull into the parking lot, I said that I'd love to have one, but figured I wouldn't be able to afford it. I thought it was a new Lexus LS470 which runs about $50,000-$60,000. Both of my parents drive Lexus vehicles, so I'm very familiar with their cost."

When Perkinson discovered the vehicle in the parking lot, the car was actually a 2011 Sonata. He knew the price and the car were right for him.

"The Hyundai Sonata cost me about $27,000, and I have everything that my mom's car has for half the price," he said. "I have voice control, navigation, XM radio, Bluetooth technology, traction control and stability control and more air bags than I had seen in any other car.

"In fact, my family and I are so well-protected in the Hyundai Sonata that it gives me the kind of peace of mind that is so difficult to find, especially at the price I paid ."

Since his purchase, Perkinson has even put the car through his own battery of tests including miles per gallon (his car got 47 mph from the base of Mount Charleston to Henderson and 42.3 mph uphill); acceleration from zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds and the handling, which was utilized on the roads through Mount Charleston.

"The Sonata has so much torque," said Perkinson, adding that the car cruised through the mountains. "In fact, it has almost the same horsepower (200) as my '94 Mustang GT convertible (215). ... The six-speed automatic transmission is unbelievably strong and the car has great pedal feel. The car is surprisingly powerful and the responsive feedback keeps me in total control."

Perkinson purchased his Sonata from veteran sales consultant Anthony Franich, who has been selling cars for 12 years. "In the car business, you must listen to your customer," said Franich. "And in this particular case, Mark knew the car as much as any customer I had ever met. He knew what he wanted, but he wasn't willing to compromise until he found the perfect car. He found the perfect car in the 2011 Hyundai Sonata."

Perkinson uses the Sonata for work, traveling about 1,000 miles a month, and he could not be happier. "I could have purchased just about any car," he said. "It handles beautifully and the navigation system helps me stay clear of slowdowns in traffic and find the fastest route around it ."
