Important tips for holiday travel

Despite the economy, millions of Americans will be flying over the holidays, and unless winter storms interfere, something amazing happens at this time of year.

The vast majority of that multitude will get where they’re going with limited hassles or delays, their bags intact and still toting Christmas gifts.

Infrequent travelers may welcome some help on what to expect over the next two weeks . All the airport security rules can be found on the Web sites of virtually every airline, as well as at the Transportation Security Administration’s site (www.tsa.gov), and at brick-and-mortar travel agencies.

Here are the key reminders: Don’t pack anything of value, such as jewelry, electronics, or prescription drugs in a checked bag; don’t carry wrapped Christmas gifts in either carry-on or checked bags; and don’t put liquids or gels in carry-on bags unless they’re in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and in a quart-size zip-top bag.

LOCALLY:

— For 24-hour parking information, call McCarran’s parking office at 261-5122.

—  Additional details on airport parking (including maps, fees and oversized vehicles sites) are available at www.mccarran.com.

—  McCarran’s long-term parking garage and valet parking areas tend to fill early over holiday periods.

—  An uncovered economy lot is located off Paradise Road just south of Tropicana Avenue, and McCarran’s remote lot on Gilespie Street north of Warm Springs Road is available to accommodate additional demand.

—  Travelers using uncovered lots should set aside at least 30 additional minutes to be shuttled to or from the airport.

—  Short-term parking and the passenger pick-up curb will also be busy. Before coming to the airport to pick someone up, please check their flight status by visiting www.mccarran.com or calling 261-4636.

—  Road construction is occurring near the airport connector tunnel, though the tunnel is not scheduled to close at any time.
