Palin Supporters Club Columnist

Conservatives love their Sarah Palin. They flat out adore her whether she hints at a presidential run, resigns as Alaska’s Governor, or skins a moose in downtown Anchorage.

Palin’s campaign stops in Nevada during the waning days of Campaign ’08 provided conservative Republicans their only opportunity to cheer, as I pointed out in recent column. Her bewildering announcement that she was resigning has done nothing to dampen the ardor conservatives feel for their Sarah.

It’s clear from these letters readers love me, too -- from a distance visible only with the assistance of the Hubble telescope.

Larry Rose says, “It really bothers the Liberals that Sarah did not put any specificity into her resigning doesn't it?

“I love it. They just do not have any fodder except repeat like a parrot what every other news pundit says that this, ‘Will end her Career,’ I don't think so! Keep on wondering what in the world happened to her. They will see in due time, when she gets the country back the way the founding fathers intended it to be, not the mess it is today. So keep on wondering!”

Chet Taszreak writes, “I wonder how long you would keep your job if you had all the accusations thrown at you that Sarah Palin has had thrown at her. And how long could you concentrate on your job if you had to spend day after day defending yourself and worst of all snide remarks and innuendos about your sons and wife, as she has about her daughters and her husband. Also being accused of misusing the Governors office as political power or just giving an interview there.

“Now that she is no longer in office she can defend her family and tell every detracting person and media person or reporter what she really thinks without dragging the state of Alaska or the Governors office into every debasing remark made by uncouth reporters, politicians, and comedians. I think she did this for the good of Alaska and she will come out ahead in the long run. Obama remained a Senator 18 months. He ran for President. I don't think he did much to represent Illinois during that 18 months but he collected his paycheck.

“Do you think it would have been better for her to collect a paycheck and use the Governorship and Alaska's money to further her political career. Don't get me started on these political hacks that knock her and even say awful remarks about her autistic son. What did she do to deserve all that smear.”

Rhonda Means writes, “You just don't get it in regards to Sarah Palin. I lived in Wasilla, AK when she was mayor. She is NOT your average by-the-book do-what-is-best-for-me politician. And that is why she is so appealing. She realizes that as long as she is governor of Alaska she will no longer be able to do the job she was elected to do. Why? Simple, because the media and those afraid of her convictions continue to harass her and her family. She cannot devote the time and attention she needs to do her elected job when all the other crap is being slung at her, still all these months after the election.

“She realizes that the best thing to do for the people of Alaska is to step away, let Lt Governor Sean Parnell step in and continue the job she started without the distractions. It has been proven repeatedly over the last few months that they are not going to let Sarah do her job. She and her family are still under attack. Because of her morals and integrity she is doing exactly what is best for Alaska. Now the people of Alaska will have a governor again who can devote all the time and attention to the needs of the state and the people in it. I realize doing what is best for your constituents instead of yourself as a politician (what a concept) is completely foreign to the media and probably a good 95% of elected officials. Thankfully, there are a handful who take the positions of elected leaders, doing the right thing for their constituents, seriously. Sarah Palin heads that list.

“We will see what her future holds. And you can believe it when she says if her political life is over, so be it. But I'll bet you her public life is far from over. I'm sure she realizes she will have much more influence outside the political arena. I am thrilled she will no longer be shackled by political expectations. Take it from a former Wasilla, AK resident, You ain't seen nothin' yet!”

Wes Hart tells me, “You news folks have been blind sided by a hockey mom. Might I suggest that you duck and cover and lay low while she lines up her next slap shot!”

Michael Kiger’s Valentine begins, “Palin’s resignation is the beginning of the end of your pathetic career. It’s no wonder print media is dying and the “elite” news outlets are floundering. Don’t you “Dems” have anything better to do than to waste your time with non-stories.”

Roy Brooks of Pahrump says, “I hardly know where to start about this Palin thing. I really think that the people in this country have become stupid. Dumbed down, you know, just like the polititians want. These criminals that are in the government and the talking heads on tv have made it a fad to jump all over Palin. Doesn't anyone take into account that she is leaving Alaska in good financial shape? She has done a fine job there and yet these goons do nothing else but vilify her. And while I'm at it, you are doing the very same thing. You said she looked addled, well, wouldn't you if all the letters you get (for nine months) were telling you what a dummy you are and what a lousy thing you've been doing. Am I mad? You're damn right I am. This lousy president (who was never qualified) is trying to ruin my country. I've lost more than half of my assets just like everyone else that's not in the government. So why don't you get off Sarah’s back and talk about the criminal activities that go on every day in DC.

In closing, I hope Palin runs for President and makes it. What a joy it would be if she got in and reversed all the crap that Obama has put in place and all the crooks he has put in his cabinet. It will almost be impossible to get an honest person in the presidency as our voting system is crooked just like every other government department.”

Mike Kenney says, “I almost always enjoy your columns, but I could not disagree more with your column concerning the resignation of Governor Palin. She has been treated so unfairly and to a degree that no other political comparison can legitimately be made. The 'bruising rules of engagement' that you speak of have not even remotely been applied in her case.”

Mike Roberts says, “I have been in Las Vegas since 1968 and have seen a lot and heard a lot and one thing I am not is a rube. Stick to your local stories about human pieces of garbage like Frank Cullotta, local con men and shake down artists. Take your article to the Dave Letterman show and get a free pass. You sir should be covering the story about the mega solar power farm in Searchlight NV and who is behind it. How about a story on the one and only 14-inch pipeline that supplies gas and diesel fuel to the Las Vegas valley and how that pipeline feeds Utah, Colorado and Arizona, and the group of people behind that. The USA is right now Europe 1939, someone speaking out against tyranny they were carted off never to be seen again, in 2009 you speak out and the media and press destroy you. I will never buy one of your books.”

Gentle reader Charlie observes, “I read your column this morning on Sarah Palin with great interest. While at first glance it opens up a debate on why she stepped down I wonder would history repeat itself.  Maybe we should look back into the 60s when Richard Nixon was down and out and came back to be elected by a landside in two Presidential elections.  The way this current administration is working I believe Sarah will have no trouble come 2012.”

John L. Smith’s column appears Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
