Legislature overrides gubernatorial veto

Voting unanimously to override Gov. Jim Gibbons’ veto on a bill containing water fees, the state Senate has completed the first gubernatorial veto override to occur in Nevada since 1989.

The state Assembly previously had voted to override Gibbons’ veto of Assembly Bill 480, which increases water fees collected by the State Engineer.

The vote in the Senate was 21-0. Two other proposed veto overrides that the Assembly had approved failed on party-line votes.

A vetoed bill to allow Washoe County to raise taxes has not yet come up for override.
