Before too much more time passes I think it’s important to underline the completely delusional comments of Hillary Clinton, who is doing media interviews for her new book, “Hard Choices.”
In an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC News she said:
“Well, if you — you have no reason to remember, but we came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt. We had no money when we got there and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education, you know, it was not easy. Bill has worked really hard and it’s been amazing to me. He’s worked very hard, first of all, we had to pay off all our debts which was, you know, we had to make double the money because of obviously taxes, and pay you have at debts, and get us houses and take care of family members. “
Howard Kurtz put that claim in proper perspective:
“Now it’s true that the Clintons, despite Bill’s $200,000 salary, were saddled with big legal bills during the Whitewater/Monica investigations. But it’s equally true that a former president and first lady know full well that they are highly marketable commodities. Without giving a single speech, they each made a killing on their autobiographies, with Hillary’s fetching $8 million. What’s more, former presidents, upon leaving office, get Uncle Sam to pick up much of their postage, phone and office rental expenses. That’s not quite the same as being ‘dead broke,’ in debt and not knowing where your next dollar is coming from.”
I would add that Hill’s statement about how they had to work twice as hard to pay off their debts because of taxes is downright strange coming from a person who thinks Americans don’t pay enough taxes.
Unlike Hillary and Bill, who can just take on a few more $500,000 speaking engagements for 45 minutes of work, most American’s can’t go out and make twice as much money to cover the debt and tax bills.
For those of us who have followed the Clintons, that is a vintage Clinton statement — detached from the truth, yet somehow Hillary and Bill manage to fool themselves into thinking it is reality.
This ability to internalize lies and then spew them out with no evidence of a conscience is classic Clinton. Bill probably believed at the time that he “did not have sex with that woman.” But he did. And who can forget Hillary telling the press that she was named after famed New Zealand climber Sir Edmund Hillary. Never mind that Clinton was born in 1947 and Sir Edmund didn’t make the climb to Mount Everest until 1953.
So, you will excuse me if I don’t cut Hillary any slack on her “dead broke” statement. In her mind, she probably thinks they were “dead broke.”
But that doesn’t make it true.
