Lorna Kesterson 1925-2012

Didn't want the sun to set before commenting on Lorna Kesterson, the longtime reporter of the Henderson Home News who also doubled as the mayor of Henderson.

I was a young reporter covering Henderson when she began trying to carry off the odd double-duty of reporter and elected city official. She was always very nice to me, though I am sure she was wary in that I worked for the Review-Journal and her newspaper was closely aligned with our rival, the Las Vegas Sun. (Later the Sun bought the Henderson Home News and then in 2010 unceremoniously shut it down). More's the pity. It was a fine community newspaper in its day.

I can't remember her doing anything particularly splashy or brave or stupid. She did her civic duty to the best of her ability and with utmost decorum. She presided over a big growth spurt for Henderson, the advent of Green Valley and some of the prep work that eventually would become Lake Las Vegas.

Lorna was friendly and courteous to all, though I must say she was a dull interview. Getting a pithy quote out of her was like pulling teeth. Nevertheless, I will remember her fondly as I believe the history of Henderson will do as well.
