Stray bullet leads to barricade situation in central Las Vegas Valley

After a stray bullet shot through a neighbor’s central valley apartment, Las Vegas police responded to the complex — a call that turned into a barricade situation for at least four hours Monday night.

The stray bullet came down through the bedroom ceiling of a neighbor’s downstairs apartment about 6:30 p.m. at 4746 O’Bannon Drive, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. David Gordon said. There were two adults and four children in the downstairs apartment at the time and none were injured.

When police responded to the upstairs apartment, where the bullet came from, a group of about five people refused to come out, Gordon said, which led to a barricade situation.

Over the next few hours, one woman and two men came out of the apartment, and all three were detained. Police believed another woman and man were still inside as of 11:15 p.m.

“We’ve given them several opportunities (to come out of the apartment) to no avail,” Gordon said.

As of 11:15 p.m. police had approached at least 30 neighboring units to let residents know about the situation. Officers suggested evacuating or staying in place without opening doors or windows during the barricade.

Some residents who chose to evacuate were allowed to sit on an air-conditioned Regional Transportation Commission bus, which was requested by Metro for evacuees.

It was unclear as of 11:15 p.m. whether the initial gunshot was intentional or accidental.

Gordon didn’t have information about the criminal history of the people involved, but added that police continue to investigate.
