Carell adds 'Dinner for Schmucks' to resume

Movie: "Dinner for Schmucks"

When: Opening Friday at local theaters

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis

Director: Jay Roach

The story: A rising young executive finds the perfect guest -- an IRS agent -- to invite to his boss's monthly "dinner for idiots," which offers certain perks to the employee who shows up accompanied by the biggest buffoon.

The buzz: This English-language adaptation of French writer-director Francis Veber's "Le Diner de Cons" is hardly the first Veber farce to get the translation treatment. Past Veber-scripted originals to go Hollywood range from 1972's "The Tall Blond Man With One Black Shoe" (which became 1985's "The Man With One Red Shoe") to 1978's "La Cage aux Folles" (which became 1996's "The Birdcage"). As for Carell, "Dinner for Schmucks" caps a successful 2010 on the big screen, with both "Date Night" and the animated "Despicable Me" scoring box-office success.
