Getting Down with Gordie Brown

Don't sleep on this talented entertainer

Plus: Gamblng and Grub • Cash In at The Palms • Farewell to a Friend

By LEN BUTCHER

Went to see Gordie Brown the other night at his new digs in the Venetian. As always, he more than delivered and should have no problem filling the room every night once word gets around. If you've never seen the show or heard of Gordie Brown, you soon will, as he puts on one of the best shows in our town.

Backed by a great band, this singer/impersonator offers a high-energy, laugh-out-loud, balls-to-the-wall performance you don't often see. He gives his all and more for 90 minutes of great fun and the standing ovation he received was well-earned and well-deserved. One very comical thing happened during the performance. Believe it or not, a guy in the audience was sleeping. Brown spotted the sleeper and asked to have the spotlight shone on him.

The guy never even moved, so Brown asked the woman beside him if she was his wife. She said yes, and explained that her husband, who worked as a limo driver, was very tired. He then traded good-natured quips with the woman while her husband Joe slept through it all. Brown started by saying, "Let me know the name of the company he works for so I make sure I don't hire him." And, "He probably went to the ticket office and asked to see a show that would put him to sleep." Funny stuff and broke Brown up. He really got a kick out of it which tells you the kind of guy he is. During all of this, Joe never moved. No-one checked to see if he had a pulse.

GAMBLING AND GRUB

Talk about service. Palace Station, beginning today, will be offering tableside food service in the Pit. A traditional tableside noodle menu will be available in "Pit 8," the Asian gaming pit featuring mini-baccarat, Pai Gow Poker and Pai Gow Tiles. The menu will be available every day from 6 p.m. to midnight and all dishes will be complimentary for qualified Boarding Pass members.

And we're talking more than a fortune cookie and cup of tea. The menu items featured are Special Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup; Wonton Noodle Soup; Roast Duck Noodle Soup; Seafood Noodle Soup; Beef Noodle Soup; Beef Chow Fun; Yang Chow Fried Rice; Singapore Pan Fried Rice Noodles; Chicken Congee; Mixed Beef Congee; and Bee Bim Bop, a Korean dish featuring rice topped with meat, egg, vegetables and served with a spicy sauce. Anything to get you to stay at the tables and keep gambling. Next they'll be supplying cots so you can lie down while you play.

Speaking of food, did you know that Pho, (pronounced "fuh") now open inside The Coffee Shop at TI, is the only Vietnamese restaurant on the Strip? The restaurant is named for a signature Vietnamese dish, Pho, a rich beef broth with vermicelli noodles infused with spices and fresh herbs. Sounds yummy and you can get it and other great dishes Sunday thru Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. if you happen to get the munchies in the middle of the night.

CASH IN AT THE PALMS

Want some extra cash for the holiday season? I mean a lot of moolah. The Palms is offering its Club Palms members a chance to walk away with a million dollars. You heard me right. One million, as in $1,000,000. Every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the month of November the resort will hold drawings where 80 Club Palms members will have the chance to play for $100,000, $500,000 or $1 million. All winners will take away at least $1000 as a consolation prize.

Beginning today (Wednesday, Nov. 1) and continuing through 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, you'll be able to begin earning entries into the promotion based on recorded play on your favorite slot, video poker and video keno machines. You can earn double entries on Mondays, Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27, and Thursdays, Nov. 2, 9, 16, and 23. $5 free slot play will be issued to participants that activate their drawing entries Wednesdays and Saturdays prior to 6:50 p.m. day of.

On Wednesdays, Nov. 8, 15, 22 and 29, and Saturdays, Nov. 4, 11, 18, and 25, a drawing will be held inside the Palms at 7 p.m. where 10 Club Palms members will be eligible to win the $1 million grand prize. If you need more details, pick up the official rules at the Club Palms booth inside the casino. For a million bucks you want to make sure you don't screw up.

FAREWELL TO A FRIEND

And a fond farewell to the Stardust, which closed its doors forever at noon today. The resort has a storied and controversial past, but it has always been one of my favorite places over the past 30 years that I visited it, whether to see a show, dine or gamble. In fact, the other day I dropped in and on the way out decided to play a slot machine, something I very seldom do as I'm a video poker player. I played a one dollar 5X machine and on my fourth spin drew two 5X with a double bar for $1,000. Fond memories indeed.

Good luck and I'll see you on the Strip. And don't forget to check out www.valleyblogs.com and tune into Lenny's Las Vegas every Friday night at 7 p.m. on KLAV 1230AM.
