United Way starts fund-raising effort
$10.6 million objective set
Review-Journal The idea is to give until it helps. United Way of Southern Nevada is launching its most ambitious campaign with a goal of $10.6 million. The fund-raising frenzy kicked off Thursday at the MGM Grand Conference Center. The MGM Grand was honored with the distinction of raising the largest donation at a single property last year -- $500,000 -- largely as a result of employees contributing through payroll deductions. "United Way's bottom line is not about the money, but to continue (its) mission of building a better, more caring community," said United Way Campaign 2000 Chairman Mike Niggli, who is also chairman and CEO of Nevada Power Co.
Last year's goal of $9.3 million was surpassed by $100,000. Fifteen percent was used to pay administration fees; the remaining 85 percent went to community service projects in Southern Nevada, including job training, domestic violence assistance, preschool education for underprivileged youth, teen parent assistance, food for the needy and various health and human service programs. The current year-long campaign that ends in June has already raised $1.2 million from companies that volunteered to start the fund-raising this summer. United Way communications manger Sharon Mann said the theme speaks volumes: "Great results start with U." The letter serves double duty, referring to donors and the nonprofit agency.
