PHOTO: Exercise Routine

A British crew, left, and an Italian unit prepare GR-4 Tornado fighter jets for Red Flag training exercises Tuesday at Nellis Air Force Base. The multinational event, including U.S. fighters, pits an "enemy" red team vs. a blue "allies" team over 3.1 million acres of Nevada desert. Pilots evaluate their performance using the sophisticated Nellis Air Combat Training System, which scores bomb-dropping accuracy. The exercises, in their 26th year, began Aug. 11 and will continue until Sept. 7, drawing more than 100 pilots. The training ground is considered the world's premier setting because of its size, climate and terrain, base officials said.
