Students and designers with the Nevada Association of Fashion Design (NAFD) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Educational Outreach Fashion Design certificate program staged the second annual "A Touch of Fashion" on Aug. 4 at The Beach, 365 Convention Center Drive. KLAS-TV, Channel 8 news anchor Colleen May opened the program.

The second annual Nevada Fashion Bella Style Award is given to a prominent citizen of Nevada for their projection of style and fashion. This year, the theme was "Men in Politics," and the students selected Mayor Oscar Goodman for his sense of style. May, last year's recipient, presented the award to Stephanie Boixo from the mayor's office, who accepted the award on Goodman's behalf.

As guests arrived, they were entertained by a fashion photography slide show by Adam Martinez.

Young entertainers volunteering their talent included Gayla Dawn, who sang the national anthem. The program then got under way with SavviGirl, a trio dance and vocal team led by Kelli Crossley. Dawn also sang "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" and "She Works Hard for the Money." Joshua Louis, 15, and 17-year old Chris Cook played selections on their electric guitars.

The show opened with fashions by designer, model and dancer Oksana Howard, who was born in Russia, and moved to New York to continue her dance career before performing with the Las Vegas show "Splash." She now designs costumes and jewelry.

Designer Belinda Jane began her career designing clothes in South Africa that were sold at a local market. She now designs sophisticated one-of-a-kind pieces of lingerie.

William Terry's Whisper Wear was also featured. Terry is a professional dancer with a modeling career.

Elisabeth Apcar presented ENA Couture, which showcased travel clothes with striking handbags and duffel bags delineated with classic tapestry portraits and adorned with Swarovski crystals.

Robin Riggsbee and Aprille Ciavarella combined their artistic talents with their line titled Exquisite Creations. The line features original handbags, created using vintage fabrics, beads and trim that can be removed to become jewelry. Riggsbee's bags are hand-painted and others are decorated with semi-precious stones and cultured pearls.

JoyRiggs Designs is also created by Riggsbee, who is both a fashion and jewelry designer and creates one-of-a-kind pieces. She was awarded Best of Boston in 1992.

Ms. Myrtle Designs is a line by Myrtle Hyman, who retired from the Milwaukee public school system. She completed the fashion design course from UNLV in May, where she won many trophies in the student competition. Hyman designs casual and cocktail apparel.

Noel C. Payne is behind Noel Costumier. Payne is a fashion and costume designer, pattern-maker and millenary instructor. She has created magnificent costumes of the renaissance era for the theatre and creates costumes for Opportunity Village's Magical Forest benefit.

Gigi Morris of Las Vegas is created by Gigi Pontejas-Morris, NAFD/UNLV fashion designer and merchandising instructor. Since she grew up surrounded by the Asian fashion scene, her designs are a unique blend of East and West. She creates for those who want individuality in what they wear. She is a core instructor for UNLV's fashion program.

The final presentation was DesertWear by Victoria Campe. Campe is the founder and director of NAFD and is the program's European modeling instructor.

Models were Crystal Monte, Chris Kiever, Leah W., Trish Sweeney, Bianca, Cui Ze Tron, Monika Nolde, Hope Collins, Molinee Green, Trisha Ularfia, Bradi Gianti, Drae Collins, Jeauxie Wilson, Dasha Giraldo, Karina Giraldo, Tatiana Giraldo, Megan Smith, Rob Le Gal, Brittany Le Gal, Tam Dao, Daniel Piscitelli, Robert Williams, Megan Koumis and Ana Brinkley. The show was produced by Campe. Morris was co-producer, and show coordinator was Michelle Zeak.

Silverton ... The Silverton Hotel & Casino, located at I-15 and Blue Diamond Road, is undergoing renovation that will transform the property from a mining town theme to that of mountain lodge architecture. Their new eating venues are the Twin Creeks Steakhouse and the Sundance Grill, which offer traditional favorites at affordable prices.

The Twin Creeks Steakhouse is a pure delight, offering sophisticated atmosphere and delicious daily-cut steaks. The room combines a warm plate of neutral colors, leather-clad walls, wood floors, authentic metal railroad spikes used for coat racks, soft leather booths and a stone fireplace. The atmosphere is great and so are the prices.

Silverton's executive chef is Rene Werner, formally of the Las Vegas Country Club, Caesars Palace, Main Street Station and the Riviera.

The hotel's exterior is being designed to reflect Silverton's move toward an outdoor lodge appearance in anticipation of 130,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World megastore, scheduled to open in 2004. The Bass Pro Shop is a celebration of outdoor life with its award-winning design, interactive atmosphere featuring waterfalls, intricately detailed ironwork, aquariums stocked with native fish, massive log and rock work reminiscent of old Adirondack lodges, antiques and nostalgic photos of sportsmen in their element. Bass Pro is a sought-after lifestyle retailer and draws millions of visitors to each of its 19 locations across the United States.
