NEW NFL SEASON: Beer + Pigskin = Bliss

Bars use food, drink specials and giveaways to win support of football fans

Wow. It must be true: Pro football really is America's sport.

And to all you baseball fans out there -- you who jabber on about the intrinsic artistic purity of baseball and how baseball best represents the nature of the cosmos -- we'll just respond:

Just how many Montreal Expos bars are there, hmm?

Case closed, with judgment to the controlled chaos that is pro football, American-style.

This year, the Review-Journal's annual search for NFL bars yielded 82 taverns, bars and miscellaneous drinking spots that claim to loyally and rabidly cater to fans of specific NFL teams. That's a significant jump from last year's total of 65.

As always, we make no claim that our little undertaking is comprehensive. If your favorite team bar doesn't appear here, it means that the bar's owner or manager didn't call us, called us too late, or called us and didn't leave any earthly way for us to call back.

In addition, we again drew an unyielding line in the AstroTurf to exclude sports bars, sports books or anyplace else that shows any other game while the home team is playing. We make no apologies, given our goal here of finding places where fans can watch their team play while surrounded by fellow fans of that team.

Just think of it as simulating the experience of watching a game from the cheap seats, but without the hassle of actually going to the stadium.

Of course, some fans are bound to be disappointed, because not every NFL team has a bar following its games. Left out this year are the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins.

But for those NFL fans who have a place to socialize as they watch their favorite team, it's time to kick back, order up, and let the season begin.

Arizona Cardinals
