Gonzales captures decision

By KEVIN IOLE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Leopoldo Gonzales and Ray Martinez left the ring at The Orleans on Friday each firmly believing he had won every round of their six-round super bantamweight fight.

Gonzales was right, winning a rousing bout that had the majority of the fans on their feet. Judge Carol Castellano scored it a shutout for Gonzales, and Glenn Trowbridge and Chuck Giampa each gave Gonzales five rounds.

Each round was extraordinarily close, as both fighters landed heavy shots from bell to bell. Gonzales, 119, got off a little quicker, and that may have been the difference.

"I really believe I did more than he did," said Gonzales, 8-0. "I was controlling all of the rounds."

Martinez, 10-4, clearly differed. He pointed to the reaction of the crowd, which gave him a loud ovation as he walked from the ring to his dressing room.

"He threw a lot of punches, but I was picking them and rolling, and he didn't land as many as I guess they thought he did," said Martinez, 119 1/2. "I thought I won every round, five at the very least. I was making him miss, and I was countering him when it did."

George Walton (16-2, 11 knockouts) won a back-and-forth brawl in a middleweight bout, stopping Jesus Mendoza at 1:48 of the fourth round. The power-punching Walton, 161, nearly had Mendoza (14-5) out in the first, but he refused to give in and landed several hard shots, too.

Mendoza, 160 1/2, had absorbed a great deal of punishment, and referee Joe Cortez saved Mendoza after he staggered from an overhand right. Most of the fans booed the stoppage, getting so loud it was impossible to hear ring announcer Maria Felipe announce the decision.

In the first fight, Wes Ferguson scored a tough but unanimous decision over Stanley Mendez.

Mendez, 136, pushed the action and tried to turn it into a street fight, but Ferguson, 135 1/2, used his quicker hands and feet to score his sixth consecutive victory.
