FROM OUR READERS: Day laborers advertise illegal immigration

Worker center would be yet another subsidy

To the editor:

Regarding the Aug. 14 In Depth article, "Supply and Demand," I shouldn't be surprised that any of our so-called officials could have the audacity to propose a center that would benefit people who are here illegally and those who would break the law to hire them. After all, not many in government appear to feel any need to follow the law.

The fault doesn't lie so much with the "supply" side. Really, as long as citizens of other countries can come here, find work, health care and education, why shouldn't they? No, the real problem is being caused by our officials and representatives and those doing the hiring.

If you are knowingly providing employment to illegal immigrants, how are you not a traitor to your country and to our children's future? Hey, anything to save or make a few bucks, right? And how does this not spit in the faces of those who have gained citizenship in the proper fashion?

Deportation center?

To the editor:

I am absolutely outraged that local government officials would consider spending taxpayer dollars to open a "worker center" for day laborers. These people are here as illegals, and those who hire them need to be fined.

How about opening a "deportation center?" How about enforcing immigration law? How about standing up for the rights of taxpaying citizens of the United States of America?

Hard workers

To the editor:

Your Aug. 14 In Depth article regarding day laborers caught my attention. I applaud these men and admire the fact that they are willing to wait in blistering heat, cold and rain so they might get a job for the day and earn an honest wage for their hard work.

These men are not panhandling or laying about all day in front of a shelter, waiting for free food and shelter or holding a sign that says "will work for food" (we all know what that is about). They are not forcing their way into homes, holding up bars or robbing banks for quick financial gain. These men really want to work for a wage.

A work center might be a good idea. I feel for the businesses that do not like these gentlemen congregating about, hoping for work. There probably isn't an easy solution that will make everyone happy. We all look for a bargain, be it for clothes, food and, unfortunately, labor.

I dislike the fact that many Mexicans do not speak English, and that many Americans cannot get some jobs because they do not speak Spanish. This is America, after all. But I just can't hold a grudge against these gentlemen, and I have to hope they get the opportunity to experience the incredible life they are looking for here in our wonderful country.

Politically correct

To the editor:

Please stop using the term "undocumented worker" in an attempt to put a psuedo-acceptable title on someone who has committed a crime. After all, would you call someone who stole from a store an "unauthorized shopper"?

National disgrace

To the editor:

After reading last Sunday's article about day laborers in Las Vegas and a possible worker center for them, I deeply resent any structure set up to aid illegal aliens. We accept the honor system regarding citizenship, which really means "Don't ask, don't tell."

I am not against employment for honest legal immigrants who have not committed a felony. There are plenty of agencies out there for this purpose. I am upset that people from another country can come here illegally, obtain work and benefits, such as food stamps, health care and schooling for their children when other good citizens and legal immigrants are homeless.

People who have a legal right to be here are suffering greatly. This is a national disgrace. The greatest country on earth cannot help its own, yet we give billions away to foreign countries and open our borders to any and all who can get in illegally.
