Perini Building Co. has been awarded the construction contract for The Cosmopolitan, a hotel-casino project planned for the Strip's south end.
In addition, 3700 Associates, the Cosmopolitan's developers, said it would break ground on the proposed $1.8 billion development at the end of the month.

The Cosmopolitan, planned for 8.5 acres south of Bellagio, is expected to include twin 600-foot towers that will encompass 3,000 hotel rooms, which includes condo-hotel units. In addition, the Cosmopolitan will have a casino, retail, restaurants, meeting space and other entertainment amenities. 3700 Associates announced earlier this year the hotel will be operated by the Hyatt Corp.
Developers hope to open the Cosmopolitan in 2008.
Perini said the first major construction would be an excavation to build a 3,800-space underground garage.
