PLAYER'S EDGE: Red Rock's new Wheel game should prove popular

Red Rock Resort opened this week with almost 3,200 slot machines (slightly more than half of them video poker), each one accompanied by an adjustable-height chair with small rollers to slide enough, but not too much, on the carpet. All of the slant tops have a padded armrest for comfort. There are 20 Optimum Play machines (where all games return in excess of 100 percent), one bank of 10-coin 5-cent Jokers Gone Wild (100.46 percent), and one bank each of 10-coin and 20-coin 5-cent Triple Pay Deuces Wild (99.92 percent). Outside of these machines, we found no machines looser than 8-5 Bonus Poker (99.17 percent). As is typical at Station Casinos, games returning more than 100 percent require $2 of coin-in to receive one Boarding Pass point while all other machines require $1 to receive the same point.

It's not a game that either of us would play, but this is the first location of the Wheel of Fortune Super Spin, which should prove popular. This is one very large horizontal wheel, surrounded by 10 monitors, each of which has a "bench for two" to sit on. Sometimes two or more players at once are involved in the same spin, with each player receiving a different amount based on the number that's in front of their machine when the wheel stops.

The casino will award XPC (free play) as do other Station Casinos. Players may collect XPC normally redeemed at other Station Casinos (other than Green Valley Ranch, which is partially owned by others) immediately. Beginning May 6, the Saturday "free gift of the week" may be picked up at Red Rock.

Nonsmoking bingo enthusiasts will be delighted to know that there is a separate, enclosed smoke-free room with its own air filtration system. There is a 20-table poker room, and the state-of-the-art sports book has a private area for regulars.

The normal Boarding Pass structure applies here, including tier names (Preferred, Platinum, Chairman, etc.), and qualifying amounts of play necessary to reach those tiers. Near the main club booth, you'll find kiosks open 24-hours where you can get a replacement card if you have your driver's license and know your pin number.

Players who use Boarding Pass points for meals will be happy to know that all restaurants are company-owned and use the 600-points-per-dollar redemption rate. The food court eateries (Panda Express, Fat Burger, etc.) are all owned by outside vendors and use a 1,000-points-per-dollar redemption rate.
