In 2007, repeat after me -- 'Reduce, reuse and recycle'

It is time to think about what we can create in 2007. In terms of green living, the opportunities are abundant and extremely important, since they have a direct effect on the issue of climate change. The recently published "Stern Review: The Economics of Climate Change" clearly reports, "The scientific evidence is now overwhelming: climate change presents very serious global risks, and it demands an urgent global response."

I suggest that, among our individual resolutions for 2007, we include four non-negotiable items regarding climate change: 1. Take action; 2. Learn as much as possible about the topic; 3. Help others understand the issue; 4. Repeat every week.

Nevada's electricity is generated mostly by coal and natural gas, primary contributors to global warming. Using energy more efficiently is of major importance. Many of the suggestions below have been covered in more detail in previous columns; see my Web site for links. For further information, here is a summary, followed by some suggested resources:

Energy Star homes and appliances: New homes should be Energy Star-rated. Green-built homes are even better. Always purchase Energy Star appliances.

Renewable energy: There are state and federal incentives that can offset the cost of installing solar electric and hot water systems. These systems hedge against rising energy costs and directly eliminate the production of greenhouse gasses.

Set back thermostats: Program them so your home uses less energy when you are asleep or away and you'll save money.

Water-efficient landscaping: Water is heavy, requiring an incredible amount of electricity to pump it from Lake Mead to our community. Using water efficiently saves electricity.

Organic gardens: The food in an average U.S. meal travels approximately 1,500 miles before being consumed. Locally produced food is fresher and creates a stronger community that's less reliant on fossil fuels.

Meat-free meals: Meat production requires tremendous amounts of resources, including land, fossil fuels and fresh water. It also generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Reducing meat consumption results in cleaner air and water.

Home offices: Some people are rearranging the way they work, reducing the need for regular commuting, thus saving time, money and energy.

Fuel-efficient vehicles: Switching from a large car or an SUV to an efficient hybrid car saves tons of CO2 emissions yearly. Don't buy a large vehicle unless absolutely necessary. Even if you can afford the gas, it is wasteful and affects everyone, not just yourself. Other options: walking, bicycles, carpooling and public transportation.

Reduce, reuse, recycle: Using all resources more efficiently, ultimately eliminating waste, saves incredible amounts of energy.

Carbon offsets: By investing in carbon offsets, any person, household, business or event can become carbon neutral and help the planet at the same time.

Involvement: Get involved in the community and with organizations that support sustainability, green building and renewable energy. Let your elected officials know about your concerns.
