SCOUTING SHOWCASE: Mayo will have say on court

Mum on future, Cincy star in spotlight as prep tournaments begin

Almost everyone on the summer basketball circuit is speculating about O.J. Mayo and where he might go. The nation's top-ranked senior must enjoy the suspense.

Mayo's future is the hot topic, but he's doing none of the talking.

"We're not going to talk about it until after the summer season," said Sonny Vaccaro, Reebok's director of grassroots basketball.

Vaccaro is also Mayo's unofficial adviser and the founder of the Big Time Tournament, which tips off today with 304 teams.

Mayo and the D1 Greyhounds will debut at 2:20 p.m. against the Michigan Hurricanes at Foothill High School.

In addition to the Big Time, the adidas Super 64 and Main Event tournaments begin today, bringing approximately 950 teams and countless college coaches to Las Vegas for a scouting showcase.

Mayo, a 6-foot-4-inch guard from North College Hill High in Cincinnati, is at the top of a deep and talented class. Bill Walker, another star for the D1 Greyhounds, is a top-10 recruit.

The Southern Cal All-Stars, competing in the Big Time, boast their own pair of elite players in Taylor King and Kevin Love.

Vaccaro said "15 of the top 25" players in the nation are in his tournament, including DeAndre Jordan of the Houston Swoosh and Derrick Rose of Meanstreets Express from Chicago.

"This is a very, very unique class," Vaccaro said. "When it's their time, whenever they choose to go pro, there are 21 guys who will be drafted in the first round in the NBA."

Mayo is considering Florida, Kansas State and Southern California. But he's likely to stay only one year in college, if he sees a campus at all.

"The kids this year have a lot of alternatives," said Vaccaro, neither confirming nor denying the possibility he could put together a national barnstorming team led by Mayo for one year.

He did shoot down the NBA's Development League (NBDL) as an option.

"These kids will not play in the NBDL," Vaccaro said. "I don't believe it's a good thing for young kids. It's a minor league."

Vaccaro also declines to make comparisons between Mayo and the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James, although the media has frequently done so.

"That's not fair because he's not as big as LeBron," Vaccaro said. "O.J. is extremely athletic and he's very exciting. I think he has a great, great game. He's unbelievably talented, and he's one of the best passers I've ever seen."

Vaccaro said another top-10 recruit, guard Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, is playing in the Big Time for Meanstreets Express.

But Ron Montoya, director of the Super 64, said Gordon is participating in his tournament for Indiana Elite.

The Las Vegas Prospects -- anchored by Andre McFarland (Durango) and P'Allen Stinnett (Palo Verde), who both will attend Brewster Academy -- could challenge for the Super 64 title.

"There has never been a Las Vegas team that can compete at this level," Montoya said.

Not to be outdone, Main Event director Hal Pastner said his field is "just loaded with talent" and features 6-6 power forward Gary Johnson of Houston Hoops and 7-1 center Kosta Koufos of Ohio's King James Stars. Koufos has committed to Ohio State.

"I always love to go to Vegas," said Johnson, who committed to Texas. "That's probably one of the best tournaments with the atmosphere and the competition."

With so many teams playing at high schools spread all over the map, coaches such as Syracuse's Jim Boeheim expect to do a lot of sightseeing from a rental car.

"Vegas is good, except we've got to drive 600 miles to see the guys we want to see," Boeheim said. "If we want to see maybe six or eight guys, I think we drove 500 or 600 miles in two days last year."
