NORM: Wager proves bad bet for poker player

There are bar bets gone bad, and then there's the little wager between Joe Sobek and Gavin Smith in the World Series of Poker.

Sobek is paying dearly for taking on his co-host of CardPlayer.com's Internet radio show "The Circuit."

The public humiliation started Friday when he showed up for the opening day of the WSOP as Batman's sidekick, Robin.

On Saturday, Sobek was dressed as a bear cub in a diaper.

He's got another week to live up to his commitment for finishing behind Smith in the lead-up events to the WSOP's main event, the $10,000 Texas hold'em tournament.

During a break in the action on Saturday, Smith, a transplanted Canadian now living in Las Vegas, told me Sobek is off the hook if he makes it to the final table.

Don't feel sorry for Sobek. The stepson of poker star Barry Greenstein has been seen in the company of "American Pie" star-turned-poker-babe Shannon Elizabeth. She was knocked out Saturday, as was 1989 champ Phil Hellmuth, in a shocker.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

There's much buzz in the entertainment community about the collapse of an investment company linked to many local headliners. "They've lost millions," a source says. ...

More on Thursday's Doyle Brunson roast at Bellagio: MGM Mirage chieftain Bobby Baldwin acknowledged that Brunson's a hard man to beat. There was the time Baldwin's four jacks didn't hold up to Brunson's royal flush. On another occasion, Brunson lightened Baldwin's wallet by $500,000 by losing 100 pounds in a year. And there was the disastrous (for Baldwin) Costa Rica golf outing, when he lost $980,000 to Brunson, who wasn't able to play but made press bets from the sidelines. ...

Strong winds canceled Sammy Hagar's outdoor concert Friday at Caesars Palace after the stage was damaged. The concert was moved inside Caesars' event center on Saturday night, with Toby Keith in attendance.

SIGHTINGS

Lindsay Lohan, in the crowd at "Beacher's Madhouse" (Hard Rock Hotel) on Saturday with beau Harry Morton. She was threatened with a lawsuit last week by the producers of "Georgia Rule," who sent a sternly worded letter to her warning they would sue if her partying caused any more filming delays. Lohan, who turned 20 on July 2, plays a rebellious teen in the film, which co-stars Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman. ... Participating in the World Series of Poker on Saturday at the Rio: Brad Garrett, golfer Paul Azinger, Laura Prepon of "That '70s Show," Dax Shepard of "Punk'd," actress Victoria Pratt and Tom Parker-Bowles, the son of Camilla Parker-Bowles, who married Prince Charles in 2005.

Also entered: "Batman" Tobey Maguire, ex-stripper Anna Benson, former wife of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kris Benson, and Reagan Silber, a partner in the W Las Vegas project. ... Jenny McCarthy and her boyfriend, Jim Carrey, staying in a sky villa in the Palms' Fantasy Tower. She's hosting Caesars Palace's 40th anniversary toga party on Wednesday. ... At Rhianna's concert Friday at the Rio's Voodoo Lounge: Carmen Electra, Anthony Michael Hall, and poker stars Jennifer Tilly, Johnny Chan and Robert Willamson. ... Comedian Kevin James, at Tangerine (Treasure Island) after performing at the Mirage on Friday.

THE PUNCH LINE

"That looked like an info-mercial for Vicodin." -- Garrett, after Tilly sang a Marilyn Monroe-esque "Happy Birthday" to Brunson during his roast.
