The Silverado High football team looked strong enough to blow out Valley on Friday, but that's not what happened.
Instead, untimely mistakes hurt the fifth-ranked Skyhawks, and they needed overtime to defeat the Vikings on the road, 34-28.

Silverado coach Doug Thornhill said he was happy just to leave with a victory, which was secured with a 1-yard scoring run by quarterback Kevin Rath in overtime.
"I told the kids it was a pretty good effort," said Thornhill, whose team fumbled five times, losing four. "If anybody else plays like we did, they're going to get beat big."
Henry Weeks did his part for the Skyhawks, carrying 18 times for 165 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
But Silverado blew several early opportunities, fumbling three times in the first four minutes and allowing Valley to take a 7-0 lead when Josiah Casella capped an 81-yard drive with a 21-yard TD pass to Hank Thorns late in the first quarter.
Weeks tied it with an 11-yard TD reception from Rath early in the second quarter, and the Skyhawks controlled the ball for the remainder of the half.
But a 67-yard drive late in the second quarter fizzled when Rath fumbled at Valley's 3-yard line with 23 second remaining in the half.
Though Silverado gained 382 yards and held the Vikings to 215, Valley kept the score close as the teams traded touchdowns in the second half.
The Skyhawks appeared to have it won when Weeks scored on a 16-yard run with 4:56 left, but JaCory Hawkins tied it for the Vikings by capping an 85-yard drive with a 26-yard run with 1:34 to go.
In overtime, Casella was sacked twice and Valley (0-3) failed to score on its possession.
Rath's touchdown came on Silverado's third overtime play.
"This is the first time we've been 3-0 since I've been here," said Thornhill, whose team opens Southeast play at Basic next week. "I think that will slingshot us into conference play."
