Las Vegas production company has eye on Hollywood

MaxxaM Entertainment has 'Actor' reality project ready to go

Two Las Vegans have founded a production company with the aim of putting Las Vegas-based programs on the air.

Director Don Lewis Barnhart and special effects creator Skip Burrows have formed the production company, MaxxaM Entertainment, and recently completed "So You Wanna Be an Actor," the pilot for a reality TV show.

The duo formed MaxxaM Entertainment two years ago and recently shot their first production at the Stardust. The last remaining documentation of the 48-year-old Stardust, which is scheduled for demolition early this year, comes from their project, which used the hotel as a set.

MaxxaM is currently in talks with major networks to have "So You Wanna Be an Actor" become a midseason replacement series.

MaxxaM is set to produce a how-to television program combining Burrows' love for cars with novices who want to learn about them, and also has six screenplays ready to film.

"We want Hollywood to know we are serious about bringing more major motion pictures to Las Vegas," Barnhart said. "Nevada and Las Vegas are untapped markets of talent that we have and will continue to capitalize on. Most film production companies have not yet taken advantage of the variety of resources the state has for major motion pictures."

In other news: St. Matthew's Episcopal Church recently celebrated the 20th ordination anniversary of the Rev. Christie Leavitt and her husband Bob's ministries in the parish.

The Leavitts were married in St. Matthew's in 1973, and they became involved in parish work. Bob Leavitt served on the vestry and as warden, fundraising chairman and lay preacher. Christie served on the vestry, sang in the choir and worked as treasurer and coordinator of the children's Sunday school.

In the early 1980s, Christie Leavitt became a volunteer priest at St. Matthew's under the Total Ministry program. She was trained locally and was ordained as a deacon in April 1986. She was ordained a priest in November 1986.
