Jabbawockeez go sci-fi in 9-minute short film
It’s been three decades (that’s four presidents ago) since America was last treated to a splashy film about breakdancers who want to save the world, but finally, we have a new one of those kinds of movies, and it comes from the Vegas Strip.
The Luxor hotel’s headlining troupe Jabbawockeez star in a nine-minute film named “Jabbawockeez: Regenerate,” which I have conveniently attached to this very InterWeb page for your viewing pleasure.
Have you watched it yet? It’s pretty good, right? Kind of funny in ways.
It’s very “Lost” meets “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” meets people-trapped-inside-Whirlpool-pods meets “Mass Effect,” with a touch of poetry, if you ask me.
In other words: Not bad, Jabbawockeez. It definitely held my interest.
But then, I’m a long-time video gamer. And this slick film has all the elements of a video game opening, starting with the plot:
It’s billed as a rebellion in a dystopic future where art, culture and freedom are illegal. That old storyline.
Therefore, what we have here is a sci-fi, anti-establishment rebellion comprised of breakdancing soldiers who will (so the description of the film asserts) reawaken the human spirit through the power of dance.
Ah, the power of dance. Hello, 1980s, how we’ve missed you, apparently.
