Investigation continues into teen's slaying at house party

More than 48 hours after a house party shooting ended in the death of a teenage girl and the serious injury of an adult woman, Las Vegas police said Tuesday they are no closer to identifying who was responsible.

Homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said during an afternoon press conference that while about 80 teens were at the party, detectives have been unable to find any strong leads to aid them in apprehending one or more suspects responsible for the shootings.

"This is tragic," Steiber said. "This is a 17-year-old girl who had a great future ahead of her. She was a good student. She was a good athlete. Had a family that adored her. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time through no fault of her own."

Steiber said neither the teen nor the woman were the intended targets.

He added that investigators don't have descriptions of anyone suspected of shooting multiple rounds from a handgun outside the party to inside the residence.

Betty "Jay" Pinkney, 17, was killed at the house party near Craig Road and Lamb Boulevard early Sunday morning. Steiber identified the woman injured as 32-year-old Karen Sinatra. She was listed in stable condition Tuesday.

Steiber said an argument ensued between people at the party who were then kicked out of the home. Shots rang out about 12:45 a.m. in the 4200 block of Tattersall Place.

Pinkney was a senior at Desert Pines High School. She had been on the track team and also played basketball.
