Hoover Dam 75th Anniversary Celebration Events

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will mark the 75th anniversary of Hoover Dam with four days of events and promotions starting Thursday with a re-creation of the dedication ceremony.

The ceremony will be held in the parking area next to the Winged Figures of the Republic statues from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 75 years to the day in 1935 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his dedication speech from about the same location.

From Thursday through Sunday, visitor center admission and tickets for the power plant tour will be reduced to $7.50 per person, and Hoover Dam vendors will be selling 75-cent hot dogs and bottled water at various locations around the dam.

Also beginning on Thursday, a limited number of commemorative 75th anniversary coins made of copper from the dam will be available for purchase.

Representatives from the U.S. Postal Service will be at the dam on Thursday to sell limited-edition envelopes, at $7.50 each, highlighting the dam's 75 years of service. The Postal Service also will have a special collector postmark available that day to apply to postcards.

The dam festivities will continue on Oct. 9, when the '31ers group in Boulder City holds its 55th annual reunion luncheon and educational outreach event. The '31ers began as a club of sorts for people involved in construction of the dam. Now the group includes the descendants of those original workers and other longtime Boulder City residents dedicated to preserving the dam's history.

Registration for the Oct. 9 event is $20, and those wishing to participate are urged to sign up by Friday.
