Las Vegas man charged after girl drowns in pool

A Las Vegas man was arrested and charged in the death of a toddler who drowned in a swimming pool last week.

Lenny Haskins, 31, was booked Tuesday at the Clark County jail on one count of child neglect causing substantial bodily harm after he was caught by the Criminal Apprehension Team, Las Vegas police said.

The 1½-year-old girl died Sept. 5 after being found that afternoon in a backyard pool in the 9900 block of Prairie Dove Avenue, near Desert Inn Road and Hualapai Way. After several adults found the girl, they started to drive her to a hospital before pulling into a shopping center at Spring Mountain and Fort Apache roads to call for help, police said.

Paramedics took her to Summerlin Hospital, where she died.

Abuse and neglect detectives investigated and got an arrest warrant for Haskins, who had left the scene after the drowning, police said. Haskins also was being held on fugitive warrants from California on assault and parole violation charges. He also was wanted in Virginia on assault and prostitution charges and in Texas on larceny charges, police said.

The Criminal Apprehension Team is a task force of the FBI and Las Vegas and Henderson police.
