Man arrested in armed standoff with police indicted

A 39-year-old Las Vegas man was indicted on charges he pointed a shotgun at police during a suicide attempt that included injecting himself with dog insulin, Clark County prosecutors said Wednesday.

Jose Luis Barrios-Aguilar, who was shot in the leg by police, faces five counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting a public officer with use of a firearm for the Dec. 16 incident.

Police were first called by Richard Steensma, who said Barrios-Aguilar was attempting to kill himself with dog insulin inside Steensma’s house on the 3200 block of E. University Ave., near Pecos Road and Harmon Avenue, according to Barrios-Aguilar’s arrest report.

When police arrived, they saw Barrios-Aguilar coming down the stairs of the home with a shotgun and took cover.

Eventually, Barrios-Aguilar came outside, set the weapon on the ground and got down on the ground as if to surrender. He then suddenly leaped up and reached for the shotgun. Officers fired eight shots at Barrios-Aguilar, striking him in the leg.

The two patrol officers who fired were put on paid administrative leave.

An arraignment hearing was set for Feb. 13. Barrios-Aguilar remained free on $50,000 bond.
