More students returning to classes at elementary school following swine flu cases

Absences declined to a third of the enrollment at Marion Earl Elementary School on Monday after peaking at nearly 60 percent Friday because of swine flu, school officials said.

Earl, at 6650 W. Reno Ave. near Torrey Pines Drive and Tropicana Avenue, reported 205 absences Monday compared to 365 on Friday. The year-round school has an enrollment of 614.

Students have been staying away from the year-round school after health officials documented four cases of students contracting swine flu, also known as H1N1 influenza A, on Wednesday.

School officials said they didn't know how many students are staying home because they're sick or as a health precaution.
