LETTERS: Downtown Summerlin has faulty layout

To the editor:

After much publicity and hoopla, Downtown Summerlin opened Oct. 9. I was elated to see the list of stores and restaurants that would be located there, listed in the Oct. 5 Review-Journal. So on that day, we decided to drive through an area that was open for viewing. I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade, but I was very disappointed to find that The Howard Hughes Corp. outdoor venue is not consumer-friendly.

While there is ample multilevel and curbside parking, the layout of the stores is such that a trip to Macy’s or Trader Joe’s would necessitate retrieving your parked car to reach the other stores. Senior citizens, the handicapped, young shoppers and children will not find the distance from one store to another feasible. Was any thought given to a monorail or continuous shuttle to move shoppers around?

Downtown Summerlin is laid out in the fashion of city blocks. I don’t think this will appeal to shoppers who prefer easy-in, easy-out shopping and dining, such as that offered at Town Square and the District at Green Valley Ranch, where walkable shopping is possible.
