■ HIGHLIGHTS: At Nashville, Tenn., Eugenio Velez singled in Hainley Statia with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Sounds (41-71) to their second straight win over the 51s (60-50) to open a four-game set. ... The loss marked the first time Las Vegas has lost consecutive games since being swept by Tucson in a doubleheader on July 12. ... Statia reached base on a bunt single and scored on Velez’s single after being sacrificed to second by Kentrail Davis. ... Jamie Hoffmann hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh and then tied the game with a solo shot to lead off the ninth for the 51s. ... Hoffmann paid dividends defensively as well, throwing out Statia at home from left field to end a threat in the bottom of the seventh and keep the deficit at 2-1. The Sounds threatened to blow open the game after the first two batters of the inning had reached base, but Las Vegas catcher Francisco Pena picked off Blake Davis at second. ... Jimmy Nelson allowed three hits and struck out seven over five scoreless innings for Nashville, but the bullpen couldn’t hold on to get him a win. ... The Sounds scored their first run on a wild pitch in the first and extended the lead on a fielders’ choice groundout by Robinzon Diaz in the fifth.
