Mountain West tweaks basketball tournament

The men’s and women’s Mountain West basketball championships will not be played on the same day next season.

The men will have the court to themselves for their final on Saturday, March 14 at 3 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center, and the women’s championship was moved up a day to that Friday at 1 p.m.

That makes for a less crowded Friday because the men and women played their semifinals on that day last season. Now just the men will play their semis, with the games at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

Also, with San Jose State ineligible because of a low Academic Progress Rate, the men’s tournament will include 10 teams instead of 11. Now the top six teams will receive byes into the quarterfinals instead of the first five.
