Spieth’s stunning collapse defied 1-25 odds

At the turn Sunday, Jordan Spieth held a five-stroke lead and seemed destined to win his second straight Masters. Instead, what awaited him was a back-nine nightmare.

Prior to an epic collapse, Spieth’s odds to win soared as high as 1-25 in live wagering at the Westgate sports book. He hit two balls into the water at No. 12 at Augusta National to card a quadruple-bogey 7, and Danny Willett surged from behind to win.

Willett’s odds opened at 150-1 in August and closed at 50-1 on Thursday. The 28-year-old from England claimed his first major championship, but it was Spieth’s stumble that stunned the golf world.

“It was a blowout when Spieth was up five shots,” Westgate sports book director Jay Kornegay said. “We just wanted an interesting back nine, and unexpectedly we got it. I just can’t believe that happened. I’m still shaking my head. It was unbelievable.”

Willett, who was even through three rounds, fired a final-round 67 to finish 5 under par, three strokes ahead of Spieth and Lee Westwood in a tie for second.
