Defending champ Bauman fires 67, leads Sunset chase

NIPTON, Calif. — Defending champion Brandon Bauman of Palo Verde shot a 4-under-par 67 at Primm Valley Golf Club’s Lakes Course on Monday and leads by one stroke after the first day of the Division I Sunset Region boys golf tournament.

Shadow Ridge senior Ben Davis overcame an early bogey to shoot 68 and is alone in second place. Sam Dickey of Arbor View and Bishop Gorman’s Frank Frisbee and Blake Taylor are tied for third at 71.

Gorman shot 370 and holds a slim lead over Palo Verde (373) in the team standings.

Coronado’s Bradley Keyer was the only player to break par in the Sunrise Region and holds a two-shot lead after a 69 that featured six birdies. Teammate Michael Kirby and Foothill’s Andrew Chu are tied for second at 71.

Coronado finished at 372 as a team, followed by Foothill (393) and Green Valley (412).

In the Division I-A Southern Region, Faith Lutheran’s Charlie Magruder shot 75 and leads teammate Dallas Haun (76). The Crusaders shot 402, while Boulder City (411) is close behind. Pahrump Valley is third at 439.

The top two teams in Division I and the top three teams in Division I-A, along with the top five individuals from nonqualifying teams, advance to the state tournament. All three region tournaments conclude today at Wildhorse Golf Club.
