Fishing Report, Feb. 27

■ LAKE MEAD — Reports have been light, but those coming in indicate that fish are hanging deep. With the new moon on Saturday, anglers may see a slight change in fish behavior. Fishing under a light or with a submersible light during a new moon is an effective way to catch stripers. With the warmer weather, anglers are seeing signs of pre-spawning activity by largemouth and smallmouth bass.

■ LAKE MOHAVE — With the warm weather, smallmouth and largemouth bass are exhibiting spawning behavior. Nesting activity is apparent in the shallows and along the shoreline. The sometimes elusive striped bass might be more receptive during the new moon. Fishing under a light or with a submersible light has generally produced good results.

■ LAUGHLIN — Action has been slow for holdover rainbow trout that remain in the river. Striped bass are beginning to make an appearance, with anglers catching a few in the 10-pound range while fishing from shore in the area of Community Park.

■ URBAN PONDS — Catch rates varied this past week. Anglers have been doing well at Boulder City and Sunset Park ponds using PowerBait in various colors. Action at Floyd Lamb and Lorenzi ponds has been slower, with some success using PowerBait.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — All reservoirs are ice-free. Anglers have been catching trout in the 10- to 12-inch range off the dam at Haymeadow and Cold Springs with spinners, spoons and PowerBait. Fishing on Adams-McGill and Dacey reservoirs has been slower than at Haymeadow and Cold Springs, but the average size of trout caught has been larger. The upper ends of Haymeadow, Cold Springs, Adams-McGill, Tule, Old Place and Dacey are closed because of waterfowl nesting.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — The only ice on the lake is in the center. Action has been good using PowerBait. Coloration doesn’t seem to matter. Nightcrawlers also are working.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The reservoir is ice-free, and anglers are having success for rainbow trout while using nightcrawlers and PowerBait. The fish are taking a variety of colors.

■ FISHING CLASS — The Nevada Department of Wildlife will host a free family fishing clinic March 15 at Floyd Lamb Park. For information and registration, contact Ivy Santee at 702-486-5127, extension 3503.
