Bishop Gorman junior Haskell Garrett commits to Ohio State

Bishop Gorman junior Haskell Garrett, one of the nation's top defensive line prospects, made an oral commitment to Ohio State on Tuesday.

Garrett made the announcement on his Twitter account: Blessed and Happy to announce that I've verbally committed to Ohio State University #Buckeyes.

Garrett's commitment is nonbinding, and the first day he can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 1, 2017. Ohio State's coaches cannot comment until that time.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 279-pound Garrett is a four-star recruit and ranked as the nation's No. 2 defensive tackle (No. 22 overall in the class of 2017) by Scout.com. Garrett is the No. 6 defensive tackle and No. 106 overall, according to Rivals.com.

Garrett suffered a shoulder injury against Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) on Oct. 23 — he recorded three sacks in the first half before being hurt — and missed four games.

He returned for the Division I state semifinal against Reed and finished the season with 53 tackles and a team-leading six sacks.

Garrett was offered a scholarship by Ohio State on Feb. 2, and he had more than 15 known scholarship offers. He chose the Buckeyes over schools such as Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Southern California, Texas A&M and UCLA.
