Wolf Creek Golf Club presented with prestigious national award

Wolf Creek Golf Club was recently presented with the highly coveted "Fans' Choice" award from Golf Digest, honoring Wolf Creek as the No. 1 public golf course in the United States. Golf Digest Senior Travel Editor Matt Ginella presented course owner Cory Clemetson and General Manager Joel Villanos with the award in front of a host of invited guests .

Wolf Creek faced off with the top public golf courses in the United States through a Golf Digest Facebook contest, pitting 64 of the Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses against each other in a March Madness-style tournament. Golf Digest's Facebook fans then voted weekly on each head-to-head matchup until the ultimate victor was decided. Of the 711,697 total votes cast during the tournament, Wolf Creek garnered an astounding 342,272 or 48 percent of all votes. In its final matchup, Wolf Creek defeated Bulle Rock 169,660 to 130,265 .

Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge to be held Nov. 8

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge, benefiting adoption, is the only professional golf tournament that pits three players from the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Champions Tour against each other in a head-to-head competition for a share of the $1 million purse.

The Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge begins at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 8 at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson. General admission is free.

Playing for the LPGA Tour team will be Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis and Cristie Kerr. The Champions Tour team will consist of Mark Calcavecchia, Jay Haas and Kenny Perry. Brandt Snedeker, Boo Weekley and Gary Woodland will make up the PGA Tour team.

The primary beneficiary will be the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a national nonprofit charity dedicated to finding permanent homes for the more than 145,000 children waiting in North America's foster care systems.

The tournament will be aired exclusively on Golf Channel and premieres Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. EST.

Tournament will raise money for military foundation

On Nov. 10-11, Butch Harmon and David Feherty are teaming up with JMA Services to raise funds and awareness for the Troops First Foundation and Operation Front Door. This VIP Las Vegas charity golf tournament will be played at Las Vegas' Rio Secco Golf Club with other events also being held at Paris Las Vegas.

The Troops First Foundation develops, operates and supports a synergistic group of wellness and quality of life initiatives in support of today's military personnel. Operation Front Door is the Troops First Foundation's newest initiative. It is designed to match funds to assist veterans in purchasing a home.

Harmon operates the Butch Harmon School of Golf at Rio Secco Golf Club and has a long history of supporting the U.S. military. Each year Harmon hosts Harmon's Heroes, a golf school experience dedicated to wounded military. Feherty, a course reporter, golf analyst and former professional golfer, established Troops First Foundation in 2008 with Rick Kell.

Memorial tournament to benefit area youth

The second annual Dan Leach Memorial Fund Golf Tournament will be held Nov. 12 at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The tournament gets under way at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start and best ball format.

Leach, a 25-year Metropolitan Police Department corrections officer and Boulder City resident, was killed in a vehicle accident Nov. 21, 2009.

All funds raised directly benefit Southern Nevada youth by providing access through grants to activities such as music, dance and athletic pursuits. This year's goal is to raise $10,000. The Dan Leach Memorial Fund is looking for sponsors at $100, $250 and $500 levels, donations of silent auction/raffle items and tournament players

The entry fee of $125 per player includes golf and dinner. For those not golfing, the dinner and silent auction portion of the event begins at 4 p.m. and costs $30 per person. To register, donate or inquire about the fund, visit www.danleachmemorialfund.org.
