UNLV’s Seagears’ status in question against Wyoming

Just as it appears forward Stephen Zimmerman Jr. will be returning to UNLV's lineup, point guard Jerome Seagears might be departing.

Seagears didn't practice Thursday, and his availability for Saturday's 5 p.m. game against Wyoming at the Thomas & Mack Center was in question.

So the Rebels still might be left with just six scholarships players ready to play.

Seagears has been battling hand and foot injuries, and he underwent an MRI on his right heel Wednesday. He said the test revealed a deep bruise but no major damage.

Seagears played with noticeable pain Tuesday at Boise State, where the Rebels lost 81-69.

"I think me being a competitor, looking out there and seeing my guys being short-handed, I can't (sit)," Seagears said before practice Thursday. "I'd rather go back out there and give it all I've got on a broken heel until I can't go anymore. That's the way I was brought up."

• BREAK-IN — Bad enough for the Rebels that they lost at Boise State, but two players and a manager returned to their apartment early Wednesday to discover it had been burglarized.

Zimmerman's McDonald's All-American ring was among the items stolen. He shares the unit with Derrick Jones Jr. and Ben Carter. Carter didn't make the trip and was at his parents' home that night as he continues to recover from anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

"Some of the stuff, a lot of it's replaceable, but the personalized items are difficult to replace," interim coach Todd Simon said.

• ADAMS GYM — Wyoming guard Josh Adams will visit the Thomas & Mack as the Mountain West's leading scorer. He averages 24.6 points, which ranks fourth nationally.

Adams is especially popular in Wyoming after finishing with 37 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals Saturday at Colorado State. So popular that a White House petition has begun to rename Colorado State's arena from Moby to the Josh Adams Gym and Recreation Center.

The petition had garnered 89 signatures as of Thursday evening. It needs 100,000 to receive an official response from the White House.

It's doubtful one is coming, but the Rams might have something to say in the future.
