ROSE SOCIETY PLANS PRUNING DEMO

The Las Vegas Valley Rose Society is planning its annual rose pruning demonstration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at 1112 Oak Tree Lane. The demonstration is free and open to the public.

TOMATO GROWING CLASS PLANNED

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Helen Brown is set to instruct an All About Tomatoes gardening class at 9 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Clark County Center for Sustainable Urban Food Production, 4600 Horse Road. A $5 donation is requested for the class.

Brown, a Master Gardener since 1997, is an expert on growing vegetables, especially tomatoes and vine crops. Brown will cover growing, starting, when to plant, what to do after blooms, tomato worm problems, wind damage and how to get started for the best tomato results.

CLARK COUNTY SHOOTING COMPLEX OFFERS RV SITES

The Clark County Shooting Complex, 11357 N. Decatur Blvd., offers 24-hour on-site RV rentals.

For weekend reservations, contact the shotgun center between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 702-455-2007. For weekday assistance with online registration or to receive a security gate code, contact the main office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 702-455-2000. SITES TO ACCEPT CHRISTMAS TREES FOR RECYCLING

The Southern Nevada Christmas Tree Recycling Committee is set to recycle Christmas trees at more than 20 locations across the valley.

The trees are set to be chipped into organic mulch for public gardens and parks. All nonorganic objects, including lights, tinsel and nails, should be removed before donation. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

Southern Nevada residents recycled 15,000 trees last year.

Trees can be dropped off through Jan. 15 at the following locations in northwest Las Vegas: Lowe’s, 6050 W. Craig Road; Lowe’s, 7751 N. El Capitan Way; Nevada Division of Forestry Nursery at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road; and Sunny Springs Park, 7620 Golden Talon Ave.

SHARED SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETS REGULARLY

An 11-member panel created to study shared services between Las Vegas’ and North Las Vegas’ municipal agencies meets every other Thursday at North Las Vegas City Hall or Las Vegas City Hall.

Committee members, empaneled to examine cost savings from the proposed merger of services at nearly a dozen city departments, plan to hold their second public meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 9 at Las Vegas City Hall, 495 S. Main St.

They’re scheduled to reconvene at the same time Jan. 23 at North Las Vegas City Hall, 2250 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

O2 SUPPORT GROUP MEETS MONTHLY

The O2 on the Go Support Group meets from 10 a.m. to noon the third Friday of each month at the MountainView H2U Office, 3100 N. Tenaya Way.

The group is for sufferers of pulmonary diseases including asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis.

WILDLIFE REFUGE GROUP HOSTS MONTHLY MEETINGS

Friends of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offices, 8050 Paradise Road.

The group provides volunteers and other support to the National Wildlife Refuge, 30 miles northwest of Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs.

LIBRARY TO HOST OBAMACARE WORKSHOP

The multipurpose room inside the Centennial Hills Library, 6711 N. Buffalo Drive, is set to host a workshop on the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22.

Organizers of the AARP co-hosted workshop plan to offer information on the new health care law, important dates and resources on how to protect against health care program-related fraud.

CITY TO HOST WINTER CAMP

Registration is open for a youth winter camp offered in the city of Las Vegas.

Holiday Kids Camp, open to ages 6 to 11, is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Jan. 3 at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road. The cost is $75 per week for the first child and $70 for each additional child in the same family. Programs for boys and girls are planned, including arts and crafts, games, sports, cooking, movies and more.

AUDUBON SOCIETY HOSTS BIRD WALKS

The Red Rock Audubon Society hosts bird walks at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road, starting at 8 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month. MOUNT CHARLESTON SEEKS SNOW PLAY VOLUNTEERS

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking volunteers to be a Snow Play Host on Mount Charleston. Every winter weekend, thousands of people flock to the mountains to play in the snow, and hosts will look to encourage visitors to have fun while reducing impact on the forest.

Hosts will also be asked provide roadside information about snow play opportunities and engage visitors at snow play sites.

Volunteers must be 18 or older and able to work outdoors in cold conditions. Hosts are expected to work weekends and holidays, with shifts of three to six hours, through March.
