NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Nominations are being sought for Nevada’s Senior Citizen of the Year. Anyone 60 or older who has lived in Nevada for at least five years is eligible to be nominated.

The National Silver Haired Congress Nevada Delegation, in partnership with the Aging Services Directors Organization, established the award in 2013. Las Vegas resident Raymonde Fiol, 77, was the 2014 recipient.

The deadline for nominations is March 31. Guidelines and nomination forms are available at nevshc.org or by calling 702 860-6349. The award will be presented in May.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY AT RED ROCK CANYON

Construction was set to start Jan. 26 at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area on two low-water bridge crossings and the repaving of the visitor center parking lots. The Bureau of Land Management’s Red Rock/Sloan Field Office and the Central Federal Lands Division of the Federal Highway Administration expect construction to be completed in 10 months.

Construction is to have a minimal effect on public use within the area. The 13-mile Scenic Loop Drive will be open, and the visitor center parking lot construction will be phased so parking will remain open at all times.

The new bridges at the Sandstone and Red Rock washes will replace the existing at-grade road alignments on the Scenic Loop Drive, improving visitor safety during flash floods in both areas and traffic flow by reducing the frequency of closing the drive during rain or storms.

The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act. For more information, call 702-515-5350.
