Energy summit will help create jobs

While the Congress is in recess, important work goes on. The National Clean Energy Summit 2.0, which will be held in Las Vegas on Monday, will build on the two previous summits which were held in Las Vegas and in Washington, D.C. This year we will focus on how natural gas, wind, solar and other renewable sources of energy will positively impact jobs as we begin to emerge from the worst recession in decades.

Sales tax holidays

This month will bring a little good economic news and tax relief to struggling American families: sales tax holidays are coming to rescue retailers and back-to-school shoppers in more than a dozen states.

Democrats can’t stop blaming GOP

For a shrinking, suicidal minority supposedly relegated to irrelevance, Republicans sure are getting a lot of attention from Democrats these days.

Stay the course on water plan

On Aug. 20, Pat Mulroy, general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, will ask her newly constituted board of directors to again voice support for the outfit’s proposed central Nevada pipeline project, designed to supplement the drought-stricken Colorado River by delivering 50,000 acre-feet of water per year as a secondary source for Las Vegas.

The Democrats are in disarray

As I consider all the hysteria that’s blowing in the political air nowadays, I can’t help but think back to 1995, when Republicans controlled Congress and were working with President Bill Clinton in the White House.

Gloves are coming off — and being replaced by lace

What kind of tea-sipping, lace-doily, pinky-finger-pointing kind of politics are we going to be left with if every failed candidate can run crying to the courts and get a $150,000 tort jackpot just because his opponent said something mean about him?

Regression sends ordinary adults into fearful tailspin

He’s 48, but everything about his countenance and energy cries out 7 or 8 years old. His face is a train wreck of rage, shame and humiliation. A melting candle wax of self-loathing drips down his body language. His lip trembles and tears fill his eyes, like a boy will do when his mother or father shames and criticizes him for breaking a dish on the kitchen floor.

The Big Picture

It’s pretty much like attending any other church service. Worshippers can meet one another in the lobby. They can sing along to an upbeat worship band. They can hear a powerful sermon. They can drop a few dollars into the collection plate and submit prayer requests, and first-timers can get information about the next step in their spiritual walk.

Wii Sports Resort” presents a win-lose scenario for Nintendo. The win: Since “Sports Resort” is a top-notch game that people can play at parties, it’s earning many millions of dollars.

Rough Road

Sales of recreational vehicles continue to skid — an expected 40 percent this year, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. And that’s after a 33 percent decline from 2007. A perfect storm of tight credit, high unemployment and still-pricey gasoline is to blame.

Flagstaff features cooler temperatures, outdoor activities and a taste of history

The three couples at the England House Bed and Breakfast in Flagstaff, Ariz., were in town for the same reason my husband and I were — to get out of the heat. The couples all were from Phoenix, where temperatures that July weekend were around 113 degrees, about five degrees warmer than Las Vegas. In Flagstaff, where the elevation is 7,000 feet, temperatures were in the mid-80s.

Clubs pay for quick success

The media event to launch the Sapphire Pool was not to be missed, but proved entirely unrevealing. Literally and figuratively.

COMING IN THIS WEEK’S BUSINESS PRESS

ROAD TO CHAOS: The economic slowdown has reduced revenue from gasoline and sales taxes, leaving less money for road expansion and maintenance in Nevada. The Nevada Department of Transportation expects a $100 million reduction in its 2010-11 capital improvement program, from $350 million to $300 million.
