In Sen. Harry Reid’s new campaign ad, kindergarten teacher Bridget Zick praises the senator for passing the Recovery Act to save 3,500 Nevada education jobs. But, it turns out, Zick’s specific job wasn’t on the chopping block. That’s not mentioned in the ad, which gives the impression the stimulus kept Zick in the classroom with her kids.

New bid to erect Columbus statue in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Christopher Columbus is on the move again in the New World, after numerous rejections in a nearly two-decade quest to find him a suitable spot.
A towering statue of the explorer — twice the height of the Statue of Liberty without its pedestal and shunned by several U.S. cities — might be erected on Puerto Rico’s north coast. It would be the tallest structure in the U.S. Caribbean territory.

1 dead, 2 injured in bear attack north of Yellowstone

HELENA, Mont. — A bear attack Wednesday in a campground near Yellowstone National Park left one person dead and two injured, Montana wildlife officials said. A man was killed in the attack at the Soda Butte campground near Cooke City that was reported about 4 a.m. A woman suffered severe lacerations from bites on her arms, while another man was bitten on his calf and taken to a hospital in Cody, Wyo.

CBS pits youth against age on next `Survivor’

LOS ANGELES — “Survivor” is going to exploit the generation gap. CBS says the upcoming edition of the reality show “Survivor: Nicaragua” will divide contestants into two tribes, young vs. old – with “old” defined as starting at 40 for the so-called Espada Tribe. The La Flor Tribe will be made up of people 30 and younger.

Judge blocks parts of Arizona immigration law

PHOENIX — A judge has blocked the most controversial sections of Arizona’s new immigration law from taking effect Thursday, handing a major legal victory to opponents of the crackdown.

Ariz. sheriff: I’ll jail immigration protesters

WASHINGTON — The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona says he’s “not going to put up with any civil disobedience” when the state’s new immigration law takes effect. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he’ll put them in it. The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person’s immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally.

Calif. wildfires burn 30-plus homes, threaten 150

TEHACHAPI, Calif. — A wildfire that’s destroyed at least 30 homes near the Mojave Desert is threatening an entire town and firefighters say they’re worried that afternoon winds will kick up the flames.

Airplane crash in Pakistan kills all 152 people aboard

ISLAMABAD — A passenger jet crashed into the hills overlooking Pakistan’s capital amid poor weather Wednesday, killing all 152 people on board and blazing a path of devastation strewn with body parts and twisted metal wreckage. It was the worst plane crash ever in Pakistan, and rescue workers battled fires and muddy conditions as they searched in vain to find survivors on the densely wooded hillside where the flight went down.
